Thrift stores in The Netherlands

Thrift stores are popular in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands, almost every village has a thrift store. Only second-hand items are offered for sale in these stores. These items are collected by the store’s employees. The items are all offered for free by individuals and companies. The things are all checked. The good stuff is priced and placed in the store. This is about everything except food and plants. The prices are often low and you can often find new items or hardly used items at an attractive price.

The stores have become very popular with the public in recent years. There is an abundance of things in the Netherlands today. Moreover, it is important to reuse raw materials and things. The people who work in these stores are mainly people who have dropped out of the normal work process and can in this way make a useful contribution to society.

I wonder if there is so much interest in the pictures of thrift stores in other countries. Are there also thrift stores in other countries? I can imagine that in countries with more poverty there are not so many things left than in the Netherlands.

When I take pictures in thrift stores I always make sure that I don’t photograph people. I do this because of their privacy. I would not like it if I were photographed without being asked.

So I keep photographing in thrift stores, because I notice that many people view the photos I take via Google Maps. The photos give an impression of whether the store looks neat and which items can be bought. People who are looking for bargains get a good impression of the interior and the size of the store through the photos. For me it is always a challenge to discover a new thrift store and to share these photos.

I think it is important to share this information with Google Map users, because I hope that this will make more people think about recycling and our environment. Above all it is very nice to visit these thrift stores.
