Each and every day, Local Guides around the world improve the map through important contributions. Some of you are passionate about cleaning the map, some of you promote women-owned businesses, and some of you do your part to support civil rights.
This Black History Month, we wanted to take a moment to applaud Local Guide Paul Kang who has made it his mission to add civil rights history to Google Maps.
Paul lives in Nashville, Tennessee, where one of his main hobbies is visiting these historic sites with his family to add to the map. He discovered his passion for editing information on Google Maps one day when his wife visited a post office that was no longer open. Like many Local Guides, he continued exploring what can be done on Google Maps from there, and eventually found that he was interested in making an even bigger difference with his contributions.
Paul started this mission in 2017 because of news that resurfaced about the story of Emmett Till, who was murdered by the husband of a woman who claimed he was harassing her. It made the news again because the woman who had accused him admitted, 62 years later, that she made it up.
At that time, Paul searched where he was killed and discovered that the location didn’t quite add up with what he had read in the news. From there, he made it his mission to investigate and correct this type of information. He’s making a difference by including these historic sites on Google Maps. You can read more about Paul’s mission to add civil rights history to Google Maps here.

Hi @KatieMcBroom it’s really incredible journey for Google Maps. The story is very much inspiration for us . Thank you so much for the journey sharing with us.
There is this little park that is 1300 meters down the street from my home.that has a story of social injustice born from war I will share the story and photos. Thank you for inspiring me now I must have coffee to make it happen
Such an inspirational story about people adding the historic sites. I wish we all should act similarly - adding places of historic relevance and creating lists about them. This will definitely help many people, as well as preserve the history for our future generations.
@KatieMcBroom I will be 20 years old by the time of the Local Guides Connect Event in October. But, it was mentioned that the minimum age is 21 years old just because to be allowed to drink alcohol. I am Indian and I don’t drink alcohol, still, will I be not eligible for applying just because of this reason.?? I am a very good local guide and I think I should be given a chance given that I take the responsibility for any of my deeds and Google will not be liable to it. I hope I will get a chance.
