Hello Local Guides. My name is Wumtea from Weija in the Greater Accra region of Ghana and a Local Guide level 6. In 2015 I had the opportunity to volunteer in an outreach program organized by Sadaqa Train to Esikuma Breman in the central region of Ghana. We donated food, clothes and books, painted the Annur Islamic School and the indigenes were medically examined.
We embarked on the trip with two buses full, each bus had a tour guide. Unfortunately, these tour guides were not abreast with the route.
I onboard the bus at 6: 30am.On reaching Winneba roundabout, our guide mistook it to be Mankessim so we turned onto the Swedru- Oda road. 30 minutes into our journey he realized we took the wrong path. Unfortunately, none of us knew any alternative route.
As a Local Guide, who had his phone in his pocket with internet connection, I then decided to search for an alternative route on google map and later announced to the team after my discovery. Our guide and the rest of the team were in support of their new tour guide and handed the responsibility to me.
We began the journey nicely, following the directions and instructions from Google map strictly until I received notification from my phone that I had only 15 percent battery power left on my phone. I began to panic and started thinking outside the box. I study and took note of the remaining routes and landmarks before my phone goes off.
Yes after 20 minutes of our journey my battery round down to zero and the phone went off. I relied on the notes I took earlier coupled with some few assistance from pedestrians to our final destination. Immediately we got to Breman Essikuma I was seen and honored as the savior of my team. I filled so proud to have been a Local Guide: They say Local Hero.
