This magical Jungle beach is one of the main tourist attractions in Sri Lanka and I love this beach very much. I lived near this beach for 6months and this is my experience. The beach is located nearly 7.5km from the main city, Galle and 2.6km from Unawatuna Town.
Golden sandy shore and
rich biodiversity background stoles every heart. This is the place where you can see
freshwater fish and marine water fish at the same time. There’s a natural very small freshwater tank facing the beach and only about 20feets away from the sea. You can see the colorful freshwater fish and
freshwater birds around this small tank.
Animals You Can See
Not like other beaches, this beach almost covered with jungle. You can see some beautiful birds and monkeys around this area very often. Especially you can see the “Purple Faced Leaf Monkeys” which are endemic to Sri Lanka and they’re also an endangered species. You can also see Toque Macaque (brown monkeys) very common species all around Sri Lanka and also endemic to Sri Lanka.
Things to do and not to do
Jungle beach also a really good place for snorkeling too. There are few snorkeling boats with thick glass at the bottom. You can also hire a basic snorkeling mask too. The sea is so calm and not much deep therefore very suitable for swimming too. You can see thousands of colorful fish and you can also see many octopuses when you snorkeling. It’s not allowed to jump or swim in the fresh water tank because it’s not safe and also not good for swimming too.
More details and a tip
There are two beaches and they are divided by a rock reef. You can visit the second beach through a small forest, and that’s a new experience. There aren’t any lifeguards and you have care of yourself. There’s a small restaurant on the second beach and there’s a very small cool drink hut on the first beach. Sunday is not a good day to visit this beach because there are a lot of local people come to this beach on Sundays and It is filled with people.
Please
The very bad thing is people throw garbage to the jungle in this beach. We arranged a lot of cleaning programs but people still throwing rubbish to the jungle and it’s a really bad problem because of continuous littering maybe we will lose this beautiful beach very soon. If you hope to visit this beach, please don’t litter.
Take only memories and photos of happiness and joy, leave only footprints of love and kindness.

@bDilshan95 Again, nice post with a beautiful photo. If my memory is correct, I went there in early 1990. At that time this beach was not popular among tourist and it was very beautiful. Then again I went there in 2010 and the beach was not crowded, expect a few lonely tourists enjoying the beach.
Now it is a busy place. I always love the calm and quiet beach I enjoyed in yesteryears.

Hello Mr.Dinakar @Dinakar1
Thank you very much! Yes, it’s a wonderful place for youngsters and also the elders too. It’s so perfect for animal lovers too. Some times we can some dolphins around here but it’s a very rare scene. Once I saw two of them come very close to me. We have to very careful when we do snorkeling with octopuses because they try to stick on our faces. When they stick it’s really hard to remove them. Actually, I don’t know much about the movie but I will search for it. Maybe you are right.

Hello Mr. Anuradha @AnuradhaP
Thank you very much for sharing your amazing experiences with us! Wow, 1990. I can imagine the beauty of this beach at that time. It was 5 years before I born. I born on May 18, 1995. This beach become so famous among tourists from 2016. Before that apart from local people, few foreigners knew about this amazing place. Because of the development of the tourism industry in Sri Lanka, this beach becomes very famous as well as Unawatuna beach. I used to live here more than 6months. An old local lady told me that she saw some dolphins near this beach when she was young. I went every day to this beach with the hope to see some dolphins but I didn’t see any dolphin. One day when I swimming a little bit far from the beach I saw two dolphins were swimming very close to me. I couldn’t believe my eyes. That was the first time I saw a dolphin that much close. Another foreign girl and my Russian friend also saw these two dolphins. After a few seconds, they just vanished. After that, I didn’t saw any dolphins near the Jungle beach. Some people say maybe those two dolphins mislead from their group because of the sound of the speed boats. That was my best experience of the Jungle beach.
Now people destroying this awesome beach. We organized many cleaning projects but they keep littering very badly.

If you are really good at swimming maybe I can arrange a swimming trip with dolphins and whales for you in Mirissa. I have a friend in Unawatuna who has a diving center. Once he told me that he plans to arrange some swimming sessions in Mirissa. As he said you can swim with whales and dolphins. Wow, really! Actually, I didn’t know about that. After finish typing this reply I’ll read your post. We already organized many cleanups but people keep littering. I think we need to find a good solution to this problem.
