It is a Five Star Luxury Hotel which is situated just beside the Gateway of India. It can be seen clearly from the harbor of Mumbai port. The name of the place is Colaba.
This hotel has two parts: Taj Mahal Palace (opened on16th December 1903) and Taj Mahal Tower (1973). It is said that Jamsedji Tata was refused to enter into city’s grand hotel at that time named watson’s Hotel, because it was meant for the white people only. In protest against this incident he decided to build this hotel. According to another view, it was built on the basis of a suggestion which came from the then Editor of ‘Times of India’. Whatever may be the reason; this hotel is considered as heritage hotel now. It has 560 rooms, 44 suits and it employs 1600 staff. Cost of construction at that time was 127 million pound (in 2008 prices).
This heritage building became a target in 2008 Mumbai attack.
