The symbol of Egyptian-Russian friendship in Aswan is located near the High Dam in the Aswan Governorate. Established in 1967, it stands at a height of 72 meters and was designed by the Russian architect Yuri Omlitser Shinko. The design resulted from a competition among architects and specialized companies to create a symbol that embodies the spirit of determination and challenge between the Egyptian and Soviet sides in building the High Dam, which was completed in 1964 and executed by the Egyptian Reinforced Cement Company. The Friendship symbol takes the form of an open lotus flower consisting of 5 petals, which holds sacred significance for ancient Egyptians. It symbolizes the lotus rising above the water’s surface, opening its five petals at sunrise, closing them at sunset, and submerging into the water once again.
