For the #monthlytopic of “stations”, I looked for stations I visited that gave me the most impact from. And this time, I am writing about the southernmost JR Station, Nishi-Oyama Station.
There is a pole stating that it is the southernmost of the JR network.
Looking from the station, Mount Kaimon (The Kaimondake Volcano) can be seen. It is the most iconic mountain (volcano) in Kagoshima. With its stunning view and form, it is also referred as “The Fuji of Satsuma”. But sadly, it wasn’t a clear vision for me when I was visiting as the cloud was covering the top part it.
Nishi-Oyama Station is an “staff-free” station (無人駅), which you can go in and out of the station without a ticket. Moreover, there is a famous yellow post box knows as “the postbox sending out happiness” (幸せを届ける黄色いポスト). It would be interesting to send out letters from that to your loved one or to yourselves to commemorate the visit.
After visiting the southernmost bit of the JR network, I really want to try reaching the northernmost station as well, which would probably be somewhere in Hokkaido.
