The South Island of New Zealand - Queenstown

My new mate @OliverKIWI posted about his flight to Milford Sound earlier today which reminded me of my trip to South Island New Zealand. My wife and her parents travelled over and stayed at the Nugget Point Hotel for 14 days. We were based at Queenstown and we drove all over the South Island. The trip was amazing and memorable in that way that only a good trip can be.

The view out of our bedroom at the hotel was quite remarkable, and as you can imagine it was awesome to wake up, then go onto the balcony to have our breakfast.

The mountain range opposite the Queenstown over Lake Wakatipu is known as The Remarkables for obvious reasons. When researching the trip, I was so hoping to be able to capture a panorama of these mountains with a snow cap. For the first 10 days of the trip while it was amazing, photographically I was a little sad that there was no snow, then on this day there was snow on the mountain near hotel and I raced down to the lake to see, and then spent hours making series after series of photos to make a giant panorama. I can’t show it in all its glory here on Connect due to the size limitations, but lets just say it’s big :slightly_smiling_face:

Interestingly in Queenstown you will meet hardly any New Zealanders. Basically the customs people, the police and the people running TSS Earnslaw. Nearly everyone else is a working back packer or tourist!

Above the town there is a cable car that takes you up above the Ben Lomond mountain and you get treated to this amazing view.

After a few freezing hours I captured the same scene at night which was like jewels twinkling down below.

We drove across the island to Duneden to ride a local railway (hey its me, I’m a train nut). This is the gaol so you can imagine what the rest of the city is like! New Zealand certainly know how to preserve their history.

One of the best parts of the trip was riding TSS Earnslaw which is a steam ship that makes speed similar to modern war ships which is pretty fantastic for a ship over 100 years old that runs on hand fired coal boilers. On the trip I paid a lot of attention to the guys down below and was invited down. I talked about the railway I volunteer on and was handed the banjo (coal shovel) and started firing. The beast was very hungry and when you had finished the eight shovels for one boiler, then you had to go to the next, and the next and the next. Then right back to the first one. One shovel in each corner, three in the middle across the grate then one directly under the door.

One of the cool places was Bradrona which I guess started out as a joke but has become a major tourist attraction that raises plenty of cash for breast cancer research. Thousands of women have hung a bra on the fence here in support of their fellows.

The Cardrona Hotel was half way on the high road to Dunedin and looked amazing. But on revisiting my review I feel that it perhaps looks better than it is!

There are a lot of instagram ready famous places such as the station at Glenorchy.

Milford Sound is incredible, its one of the places where you feel a total connection to this earth. I can’t really describe it except that it is beautiful.

Thanks for joining me on this quick tour of the South Island of New Zealand. We had an amazing experience and are sure to return.

Hey @PaulPavlinovich ,

Thanks for taking us with you on your trip to Queenstown. I love every photo that you shared and I am convinced that New Zealand was the best place to film “Lord of the Rings”. The view from your hotel room was breathtaking and The Remarkables are indeed glorious. By the way, what did you have for lunch at the Cardona Hotel?

P.S. I hope that some day I am going to hang my bra at Bradrona… and travel around New Zealand, of course. :slightly_smiling_face:

Lol @MoniDi you made me skip down my timeline in Maps to see so I could answer your question properly, and based on the review I found there from me I find we didn’t eat there but only had coffee although we did stop there for lunch. You can read my review https://goo.gl/maps/XGjpjAPQvSmw4XdE6

This makes me wonder where we did eat because Cardrona was basically in the middle of nowhere!

This made me reminisce on my two-week trip to New Zealand, @PaulPavlinovich . Your photo of the remarkable really brought me back there to that time and place. So many good memories and I couldn’t agree more that Milford Sound helps center you here on Earth and make you feel so connected and yet so very very small at the same time. I also regret not taking a tour aboard the TSS Earnslaw.

Lovely read. I will always read through an entire New Zealand post!

HI @PaulPavlinovich

New Zealand is so beautiful! I really want to go ~

The photo are so grandeur! The whole forest, mountains, clouds and lakes, it must be very pleasant to travel there!

This prison is so beautiful. This kind of building is rarely seen in Taiwan, and this is not like a prison!

Seeing the funds raised for breast cancer in the photos, and here is full of bras, thank them for responding to the activity, never seen this kind of scene in life!

@Ant_Bad_Yogi this is just a tiny bit unpatriotic of me, but if you had a limited budget and a choice between the South Island of NZ and Australia (where I live) I reckon I’d head to NZ :slightly_smiling_face: Don’t tell any Kiwis that though - I’d never hear the end of it. I hope I don’t get deported from Australia now ;).

@Robert24 absolutely amazing indeed. We were so lucky with our hotel. How often do you open the curtains of your room to find a view like that? Amazing.

@JordanSB centred on the earth, what a wonderful way to put it. You feel very small but also very part of the surroundings.

@KyleZhang when Bradrona first started the locals and some others tried to have it removed as indecent. The publicity from that made it grow overnight as women flocked their to offer their support. Its an amazing story.

@OliverKIWI driving around is well worthwhile. You see so much of the landscape and you can take your time. My family did get a little bit sick of me stopping to make photos though!! “Oh look another lake, can we go yet?” lol.

Thanks @vijayparadkar I enjoy making and sharing images so your words bring me happiness.

@user_not_found please do visit, its a wonderful place.

@LuigiZ North Island is more like Australia to be honest, there is a more fast paced feel and its oriented to the enterprises going on there. South Island is relaxed and populated by happy people who just enjoy life.

@YuliiaZa it is certainly an amazing building from a time long ago where every building was wonderful architecture no matter what its use

@Eros_Hassen I certainly didn’t find any ugly places :). I think it helps when you’re really enjoying your trip. The enjoyment shows in your images.

I totally understand and I want to do that too. Often I was not allowed, as those random stops can be dangerous sometimes. @PaulPavlinovich

Yes true @PaulPavlinovich , that’s what other people told me as well when visiting the South Island and that’s why I wish to visit it once.

I really loved NZ also being in the North Island because I found a very nice life style, very nice people approach, besides the beautiful places. And I definitely agree it is very similar to Australia but, as coming from external, I can see there are some differences between the two countries  .

Btw I love Australia as well, being there (always East Coast) lot of times  .
