The Six Must Visit Museums In Amsterdam.

Amsterdam is a city renowned for its famous museums . Many of these museums have rich history behind them dating back to the 17th century .

In going to visit my favourite Museum ‘’ The Van Gogh ‘’ I discovered other museums of equal fascination which I intend to share with you.

Here are my top list.

The Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum is an impressive museum even from far distance. It is a Dutch national museum dedicated to arts and history . The museum is located at the Museum Square in the borough Amsterdam South, close to the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and the Concertgebouw. founded in The Hague on 19 November 1798 and moved to Amsterdam in 1808, where it was first located in the Royal Palace and later in the Trippenhuis. The current main building was designed by Pierre Cuypers and first opened in 1885.

Van Gogh Museum

Van Gogh Museum is my favorite any time any day, ever since I watched the movie ‘’ At the Eternity Gates’’ I had nurtured the dream of visiting it. The museum contains the largest collection of Van Gogh’s paintings and drawings in the world. In 2017, the museum had 2.3 million visitors and was the most-visited museum in the Netherlands, and the 23rd-most-visited art museum in the world. In 2019, the Van Gogh Museum launched the Meet Vincent van Gogh experience, a technology-driven “immersive exhibition” on Van Gogh’s life and works, which has toured globally.

Royal Palace Amsterdam

The Royal Palace Amsterdam was built as a city hall during the Dutch Golden Age in the 17th century. The building became the royal palace of King Louis Napoleon and later of the Dutch Royal House. The structure was built as the Town Hall of the City of Amsterdam “facing the landing wharfs along Damrak , which at that time would have been busy with ships”. The town hall was opened on 29 July 1655 by Cornelis de Graeff, the mayor of Amsterdam. The main architect was Jacob van Campen, who took control of the construction project in 1648.

Formerly a Dutch Reformed Church parish, it now belongs to the Protestant Church in the Netherlands. The Nieuwe Kerk is no longer used for church services but is used as an exhibition space. It is also used for organ recitals. There is a café in one of the buildings attached to the church that has an entrance to the church (during opening hours).
