Swamy is a popular chain of restaurants at Thane that specialise in vegetarian, south Indian food.
Their outlet at Hiranandani Estate has seating and is open air with two sides, the front and one side open.
I chose their meal on a recent visit.
The kitchen took a while to make my set meal called Thali in Hindi. Thali stands for both the plate used to serve and the meal.
The thali is a steel plate with bowls large and small to hold the different courses. Rice is served in a bowl.
There is a trick to eating thalis.
Eat the sweet first. Thereafter I finished the pancake like mini Uttapam which is eaten with a potato curry and a sauce called chutney.
Thereafter I mixed the sambhar or sour lentil-vegetable curry with rice. I also added the rasam or a sour, pepper based tomato soup like dish.
I ate the rice sambar mix with papad or lentil fritters and a lime pickle that is tangy spicy.
A yogurt based raita having minced cucumber and tomatoes is also part of the Thali. I mixed that too with my meal.
See the pictures to realise how my Thali went from FULL to ZERO.
Bon Appetit. Happy Weekend.
