Just outside Wicklow Town here in Ireland along the rocky coastline you will come across the ruins of Black Castle. Following the arrival of the Normans in 1169 numerous Castle’s were built along the coastline of Ireland by Baron Maurice Fitzgerald to protect the English empire. These Castles were under constant threat by local Chieftains who opposed English rule and in 1301 the Castle was finally destroyed by the O’Byrne & O’Toole Clans.
Very little remains of the Castle today other than the remains of some walls and windows. You are free to walk in and around the ruins. The Castle is a reminder of the once turbulent history Ireland had under English occupation that spanned 800 years.
At the moment Ireland is facing a strict lockdown so not many people are out. And because this is within 5km of my home I am able to travel to it with ease. Usually there are people walking around it with Dogs, but I was lucky this day.
Glad you enjoyed this little piece of Ireland its history, have a good day.
As I live up on a Hill I tend to drive down, sometimes we park somewhere else along the Coast and walk to the Castle from there. You are right, places like this are best enjoyed with others.
