How many things can be discovered by looking at Google Maps. I highly recommend it if you are visiting somewhere new. Be wary of online guides and rely a little on adventure and instinct, obviously using Maps and the advice of Local Guides. At home, while I was preparing the trip, I pointed my finger at the camera icons, or at indications of parks or attractions that weren’t found in the guidebooks such as “What to do in 7 days in…” or “10 things to do for …”. By now they are only means of advertising paid attractions or some extremely touristic and very popular places. Azulejos de Veneguera: the rainbow mountains of Gran Canaria. I can’t miss it, few online pages talk about it, it’s something never heard of, this will definitely be a destination on our trip. The Rainbow Mountains are a natural wonder that can be found in amazing shapes in Peru and China, but I had never heard of them even being in Gran Canaria.

After the first morning spent in the sun, in the afternoon we decide to visit the rainbow mountain. The place to reach is 40 km from our hotel, but it takes about an hour to drive 40 km in Gran Canaria even if half of the journey is on the motorway. After a curve, a straight stretch of about 100 meters, this already could be considered a rarity on this island, the green, pink and red colored part stands out in front of us. Impossible not to slow down and be enraptured by the color of the rocks, never seen so colorful. We park and always with our good boots on, we go up the gully a little to take a closer look at the rocks. Other tourists, with an annoying drone, photograph and explore the rocks from above. A yellow sign on the road warns of the danger of the place for motorcyclists and drone operators, advising that 9 people have lost their lives in recent years. It reminds me of what drone operators can do to take a selfie. In Corsica on a pinnacle of rock in the Calanchi di Piana, a gentleman with a drone stood with outstretched arms until the drone passed over his head and below him was a ravine of at least 200m

Looking around, all the volcanic rocks of the place have veins of different colors. The color is due to the different presence of minerals in the rock accompanied by phenomena relating to the different temperatures of the lava during the volcanic eruptions which took place thousands of years ago. We also looked for a small lake with a waterfall, but we couldn’t find the trail. Proof that the place is still almost unknown is the fact that there are no indications of paths, you have to make do. Furthermore, sunset was looming and it would have been imprudent to enter the mountain.

One last look at the colorful mountains before getting back into the car. The absence of the sun changes the color contrast making the place even more magical, prompting us to take another series of photographs. We return to our hotel with a great sense of satisfaction having seen a truly rare place in all of our magnificent Earth.
