The Power of Map Accessibility to Change Lives

Usually, we try to solve the problem when we face it, but we never try to overcome it from the beginning; it is our human nature.

Last December 30th, in collaboration with Local Guides Bangla, I organised the “Map Accessibility 2022” event for the first time with local guides of Rajshahi. On the occasion of International Day of Disability this year, Meetup campaigns were announced by Local Guides Bangla on the same day in Dhaka and Rajshahi.

Asaduzzaman Raju spoke about mapping; his early day’s story was inspiring for everyone. Ayan Saha expressed that although he has been involved in mapping for a long time, he was not active in such activities, but this time he is happy to be here for this important issue.

Nahid Hossain Bhaiya discussed the overall topic extensively, divided into groups to implement the theme-organizing activities, and provided guidance. We check accessibility by identifying different places, including restaurants, buildings, clinics, and public toilets.

Where there was no accessibility, we discussed such matters in detail by talking to the officials and persons in charge of the location. They expressed hope that the problem with accessibility will be resolved in the future.

I have been actively involved in mapping for quite some time and am currently a level 8 local guide. I have never done this map accessibility thing. This one event changed the course of my work. Now, whenever I go somewhere, I feel like checking the accessibility of this place.

One of the new additions to my mapping activities over the last 2-3 years has been map accessibility.

We express our thanks and gratitude to Local Guide Bangla in whose organized initiatives we Rajshahi Local Guide participate; we express our gratitude to the respected @ShafiulB Bhaiyya, who sent stickers of Google Local Guide from Dhaka to Rajshahi through Sundarban Courier Service and always along with directions. He hoped to organise a big event together in the coming days.

Love to all local guide volunteer brothers. If society moves forward, the country will move forward, and the next generation, the world, will move forward.

Ha Ha Ha, this happens to me also @shahinurime . Where ever I go, I check if there are accessible entrances and if the seating is suitable for seating from wheelchair height. Even today morning, when I was on my morning walk, I stopped by a diabetic centre and talked about their seating problems.

It’s amazing to see how technology can make a difference in the world, and it’s great to see how Local Guides are using this to make a positive impact.

Hello, @NahidHossain

Google Local Guides is a global program that encourages people to explore their local area and share their knowledge about it.

I was able to gain invaluable experience in creating content, writing reviews, and interacting with the local community. All of this knowledge and experience has been invaluable to me as I continue to explore my local area and share my experiences with others.

Thank you…
