The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is the largest celebration of its kind in Thailand.
Known as the Nine Emperor Gods Festival – the celebration is nine days of nonstop food and ceremonies; it is also called Jiya Chai, or เทศกาลกินเจ.
The ceremonies include walking on fire, climbing ladders made of sharp blades, and self-mutilation or inserting knives and sharp objects through the body. But, these rituals were not allowed this year due to the pandemic.
Ironically, the festival started 200 years ago because there was an epidemic. People were dying and getting sick. After 9 days of honoring the 9 gods with cleansing and purifying rituals, people were cured! This includes no eating animal products and no drinking alcohol.
