Certain things happen in life without any plan, especially for the things that born after our existence. Being a local guide is also an unplanned part of my life but now as a local guide I have a plan; a plan of making a visible & accessible world beneath the tip of everyone’s finger.
This is ‘The One Man Community’ from the top of the world; Nepal.
A year ago I was heading for the examination center. What to worry about if my world is beneath the tip of my finger? I activated the ‘start driving’ option of Google Map and made my way. Finally the destination arrived but not the destiny. I got to know that the devastating earthquake occurred in 2015 had swiped away the building I was looking for. The destiny was now established somewhere else. When I use think of such cases I feel within myself that it’s not my responsibility but a bit of humanity to edit the database of Google Map to make it more reliable for needy people; especially for the people in emergency. Am I not doing well for the society by editing the map?
In the early years the community was emerging and we used to talk in posts like now we do in chatting platforms. It feels so good to look now and then that the local guide community is widespread now. The platform introduced me with widespread fellows. I met in person a lot of likeminded friends from Nepal. Many international fellows are thoroughly in contact and though not having meetup in person they are always a topic of our conversations. Not having day to day presence in current days this old fellow may feel like a new guy to the many local guides over here but I old footprints here.
Till today I would have carried the same old phone if 360 photography was undiscovered. I wonder how fast the seemingly fictitious things become obvious in this 21st century. The first 360 photo I saw for the first time was more than usual to me. Uploading 235+ photos to the map capturing solely by using cell phone only, without connecting any external 360 camera, now I’ve learnt some dance steps too. Someone looking from the beyond must also be entertaining while seeing me spinning while taking 360 photos. Now a days private entrepreneurs use to hire professionals to add 360 photos to their business but I focus on governmental organizations as they are not of anyone’s’ concern to add 360 photos and nobody gets paid for doing that.
A fellow local guide brother whom we use to tease in a fanatic way as ‘toilet guide’. He has added a lot of public toilets to the Google maps. Travelling together he says, ‘brother please leave this toilet for me to add in the map then after add the photos you’ve taken’. I salute all the fellows who as a Google local Guide are self-mobilized for the good cause. While being a novice local guide in early phase there’s a different point system for map additions. I remember the days I used to visit the websites or places to collect bulk of phone numbers of hospitals and police stations. I was concerned on earning points but I never did it the wrong way. Now I am level 09 Guide and I proudly say that.
If updated we can have already what can be needed later. Probably this is why our moderators inform us to stay updated. As the teaching post about creating a list was published on Connect I had created some lists of places in the Google map. One of them was ‘Major Hospitals in Kathmandu Valley’. It’s my pleasure if such little efforts help my surroundings. Now I think it’s not required to highlight what I love to share on google Map.
I rejoice upon living a life. Traveling is such a tool which makes a life lively. Google Map is a part of travelling which directs us to the venue. Fellows are the part of Google Map who joins with me in meetups or digital platforms to share the moments together. Local Guide Connect is such a platform which provides me a platform to spread what I use to experience. To sum up I am a happiest Google Local Guide; the combination of all.
I have hosted and attended several meetups but, In my life, I cannot forget the google meetup Chandragiri Photo Walk which turned out full of risks but we succeeded it despite of difficulty.
Thank you so much for your attention reading this post till here. Namaste!
Note: All the contents except the texts were collected during local guide meetups.
