The most interesting thing I have done as a Local Guide was to start a Meetup Group.
I am always out exploring and taking photos so I became a Local Guide when the program started. I go out, explore and take photos whenever I have free time. I thought it would be more fun if people joined me.
The Meetup Group I started was 1000 Things to See In DC Before You Die. I made a list of 1000 places I wanted to see. I was hesitant to start a group because I wasn’t sure people would be interested, but within a month, more than 3000 people joined the group.
So I began researching the locations and leading groups to different places in D.C. We would explore several places in a day and usually ended the day in a local pub.
I literally became a guide and at the end of the day I would upload the photos to Google Maps. D.C. is a magnificent place to lead a Meetup because of the number and variety of places to see. There is something to see for every interest. My job took me out of D.C. after a couple of years, but not before I had visited more than 350 places. I may start another Meetup some day.
