I’ve been a local guide for 4 years now and I’ve had quite a few interesting experiences in my journey, but there is one which made me a catalyst to bring about a little but significant change in the world.
One day, I went to the garden I would visit every two to three weeks. On that day, I had to use the washroom there. As I went inside, there was filth everywhere. A horrid smell, broken pipes and no clean toilets. In a brief description, it was a completely unhygienic place and I was completely horrified of what I had seen.
Looking at that, I immediately decided to click pictures and make a video of how horrible and disgusting the washroom was and write a review about it on Google Maps. This was a very unhygienic situation which needed immediate action as it threatened the health of anyone who used that washroom. Hygiene is topmost priority at all costs, whether it is a garden, a restaurant or a hotel. But here, I realized that even after charging the people who visit the place, they were only preserving the cleanliness of the garden and had left the washrooms in utterly ridiculous shape. So I went back inside and clicked a few pictures and decided to edit the review I had written earlier, also adding proof of what I’d seen there.
About two weeks later, when I visited the garden again I decided to go check if any action had been taken in response to the review I had put up. As I went in, I saw that the place was much cleaner and better than the last time I was there. The broken pipes had been fixed, no more of that disgusting smell and it was looking much more clean. Of course, there were a few more things to do but atleast they had started working on it and that made my day. I realized that I’d made a change and this change would keep the visitors of the garden safe from any kind of disease they could possibly contract in that unhygienic and dirty washroom.
This was a small change but it was pretty significant in regards to people’s health. I realized that there is someone in the authorities, who is watching the reviews and initiating change so as to make the place better for the people. Hence, as a local guide I find bringing about change to be the most interesting part of my work.
