This happened one evening when I had already finished all my duties. I noticed that for my local University, most of the buildings such as Library, Cafeteria, Painting & Plastic Arts, several laboratories, among other buildings were missing from Google Maps. These can be found using the traditional maps that are distributed throughout the campuses. On the other hand, different University map printings, which contain building locations, were being used for reference by the alumni among others. I thought that it would be so much easier to have those places on Google Maps, because of the convenience of having up-to-date information, screen-first format and most importantly, GPS, indexing, opening hours and time estimates. So, I set out to register on Google Maps all of the different buildings, using the University’s nomenclature.
So now, when someone says something like: Meet me at Building C or The conference will be held at Audiovisual I, a simple Google Maps search on your device prompts the location on the map along with the distance from your current location. In my opinion, this is so much more convenient than to go looking for the map and all of the subsequent implications. This is of interest when the University hosts seminars, congresses or sports events among students and professors from different regions of the country. Normally, these attendants will be handed a reference guide, but the included map may get lost or be easily misplaced. So, I think it’s very convenient to have all of this information in one place, especially considering the environmental impact and cost of the printings.
Last year, the University held a national sports event that gathered attendants from all around Mexico.
