A week ago, the Connect Live 2019 ended in San Jose, California and I still can’t believe everything I lived, how fortunate and special I am for having lived so many experiences in these last days.
At the beginning of March 2019 I received the call for the first time of a Connect Live, before I did not know that the Local Guides community was so large, varied and that there were so many ways to collaborate with Google; so I started thinking about what to say in my video, to contribute more and better in Google Maps to reach level 8 and to know Local Guides Connect because I was totally unaware that this forum existed; While doing all that I just started to fantasize about what it would be like to go to California, meet the Googlers and people from all over the world.
My friend @Eric19 helped me with the video, he is also a Local Guide and he is a doctor like me, so he had to learn to edit the videos in a short time and in the most amateur way he could; I wrote my post about my favorite food (hamburgers), answered the questions, completed the lists and it was time to send my request, only wishing him luck; For almost 2 months I didn’t know anything else about it and just kept reminding me that the results came out on June 3. I woke up on June 3 and as I did not see any email I assumed that it had not been selected and my day went by normally until about 2 in the afternoon the notification came to my cell phone, when I saw it my heart began to beat, to blush and I just came out shouting a: “Do not invent!”; I remember that we were in class and my classmates in front of me just turned to see me and asked what had happened to me, I had no words to explain to them at that moment what it was that I had won and why I had won it; So I just jumped out of the room to read well what had come to me.
Since then my friends who used to see me weird for walking taking and uploading photos, writing reviews of the places we were going to, are now a little more interested in the Local Guides program and start contributing to it.
Only two problems remained: the visa and getting permission to miss those days at work; where without doubt the word Google and being able to represent my country in an international event greatly facilitated both.
While the desired date arrived, I went into the Telegram group with other selected Local Guides, I met them and read on Connect, watching their videos, starting to connect with some either through social networks or even in person as with @Marichams , who came to Mexico for reasons of his work and we did a #meet-up (clic to read about that) between Mexico and the Dominican Republic.
The wait was getting bigger, especially when I read that some were already starting to arrive in the United States and I already wanted my turn to arrive, finally on November 12 and after 5 hours of travel I arrived at the San Francisco Airport, where they received me very kindly and I met the first LG who also arrived at that time their flights (Japan, Canada and South Africa); already in the hotel I began to see many people I had seen in the Connect and began to introduce myself to them, taking advantage of the fact that I can easily recognize faces and names.
Indeed, the event was going to be something great as I imagined it, the more I walked the more people and the more countries I knew and the more it excited me (especially when giving me my badge with my name and my country). The living room doors opened and it was very surprising to see us all gathered; doing various activities since some of them presumed their typical costumes, others gave away sweets, coins, key chains, etc., others registering each moment with their camera and all of them were proud of their countries. The afternoon went on very pleasantly until we suddenly heard the microphone that gave us the welcome and best of all, it ended with a surprise gift, a Google # Pixel3XL for each of the attendees.
The first day left me with a very good impression but the second was better because after a bus trip where everyone was happy, meeting and exchanging opinions about the previous day, we arrived at Google’s facilities and they seemed as great as they described them in videos on YouTube or in other posts, a relaxed and conducive environment to work in harmony, where the best of all was that it had great accessibility and they were pet friendly. That day we learned a lot in the sessions about the importance of our contributions on Google Maps not only for our city but its reflection worldwide, as well as many other things in the sessions with the Googlers. As you have seen in the photos, that day we also went to the Google Merchandise Store, where they had very good products with either the #Android, #Youtube or #Google logo; I couldn’t resist and bought some items for my family, friends and a souvenir shirt for me.
Thenext morning after breakfast at the Hotel, we returned to take the buses to get to the Google Event Center, where the driver played reggeaton and it was curious to see how not only Latinos know, sing and dance the song “Despacito”.
The sessions of that day were what I liked most about the whole event, where they certainly leave us with great desire and great expectations to continue contributing to the program; That afternoon we also got to know San Jose a bit and at night it ended with a party at the Forager Tasting Room & Eatery, where by the way I tried the Indian food for the first time and took a very pleasant experience, that party was just what It was needed after three days of getting to know each other and being in the mood to the fullest. I had never been to a party with open bar and with people from so many countries and it was something wonderful, everyone dancing to the rhythm of the music, so I enjoyed it a lot because it is hardly a scenario that can be relived (or is it? #ConnectLive2020).
Unfortunately everything has a beginning and an end, so the Brunch at the hotel was a somewhat emotional and even sad farewell; There prizes were given to the most wonderful people with unimaginable scores, and not before Google gave us the precious socks and other objects to further improve our skills as LG. There were many hugs, kisses, photos, gifts, new friends on Facebook, Instagram, etc. Just as some arrived before # ConnectLive2019, others left later and that was where I was able to see very representative places in San Francisco such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39, Painted Ladies, Castro Street, etc.
Without a doubt, I can’t stop thinking about everything that I would have missed but it would have occurred to me in 2016 to upload my first photo, rate some stars somewhere or if I had ignored the notifications to continue contributing to reach level 9 (46,203 points in this moment); so even though nobody pays you for it neither Google nor the companies; I will continue to have a fairly entertaining hobby like Google Maps, being a proud Local Guide.

The mexican review (Connect Live 2019): Because this story didn´t begin in California.
Hace una semana que acabó el Connect Live 2019 en San Jose, California y sigo sin poder creer todo lo que viví, lo afortunada y especial que soy por haber vivido tantas experiencias en estos últimos días.
A principios de marzo de 2019 recibí la convocatoria por primera vez de un Connect Live, antes yo no sabía que la comunidad de Local Guides era tan grande, variada y que había tantas formas de colaborar con Google; así que comencé a pensar en que decir en mi video, a contribuir más y de mejor manera en Google Maps para alcanzar el nivel 8 y a conocer Local Guides Connect porque desconocía totalmente que existía ese foro; mientras hacía todo eso solo me ponía a fantasear sobre como sería ir a California, conocer a los Googler y a personas de todas partes del mundo.
Mi amigo Eric me ayudó con el video, él es también Local Guide y es médico como yo, así que tuvo que aprender a editar los videos en poco tiempo y de la forma más amateur que podía; escribí mi post sobre mi comida favorita (las hamburguesas), respondí las preguntas, completé las listas y fue el momento de enviar mi solicitud, sólo pudiendo desearle suerte; durante casi 2 meses no supe nada más acerca de ello y sólo me mantenía recordando que el 3 de junio salían los resultados. Me desperté el 3 de junio y como no vi ningún correo supuse que no había sido seleccionada y mi día transcurrió de manera normal hasta que a las 2 de la tarde aproximadamente me llegó la notificación al celular, al verlo me empezó a latir el corazón, a sonrojarme y sólo se me salió gritar un: “¡No inventes!”; recuerdo que estábamos en clase y mis compañeros de enfrente solo me voltearon a ver y me preguntaron que me había pasado, yo no tenía palabras para ponerme a explicarles en eso momento que era lo que había ganado y porque lo había ganado; así que solo me salí brincando del salón para leer bien lo que me había llegado.
Desde entonces mis amigos que antes me veían raro por andar tomando y subiendo fotos, escribiendo reseñas de los lugares a los que íbamos, ahora ya se interesan un poco más en el programa de Local Guides y empiezan a contribuir en él.
Solo quedaron dos problemas: la visa y conseguir el permiso para faltar esos días a mi trabajo; donde sin duda la palabra Google y el poder representar a mi país en un evento internacional facilitaron muchísimo ambas cosas.
Mientras llegaba la fecha tan deseada, me fui adentrando en el grupo de Telegram con otros Local Guides seleccionados, los fui conociendo y leyendo en Connect, viendo sus videos, comenzando a conectar con algunos ya sea por redes sociales o incluso en persona como con @marichams, quien vino a México por motivos de su trabajo e hicimos un #meet-up entre México y República Dominicana.
La espera era cada vez más grande, sobre todo cuando leía que algunos ya empezaban a llegar a Estados Unidos y yo ya quería que llegara mi turno, finalmente el día 12 de noviembre y después de 5 horas de viaje llegué al Aeropuerto de San Francisco, donde me recibieron de forma muy amable y conocí los primeros LG que también llegaban a esa hora sus vuelos (Japón, Canadá y Sudáfrica); ya en el hotel empecé a ver muchas personas que había visto en el Connect y comencé a presentarme con ellos, aprovechando que tengo facilidad para reconocer caras y nombres.
Efectivamente el evento iba a ser algo grandioso como lo imaginaba, mientras más caminaba más personas y más países conocía y más me emocionaba (sobretodo al momento de darme mi badge con mi nombre y mi país). Las puertas del salón se abrieron y fue muy sorprendente vernos a todos reunidos; haciendo diversas actividades ya que algunos de ellos presumían sus trajes típicos, otros regalaban dulces, monedas, llaveros, etc, otros registrando cada momento con su cámara y todos ellos estaban orgullosos de sus países. Siguió pasando muy agradable la tarde hasta que de repente escuchamos el micrófono que nos dio el recibimiento y lo mejor de todo es que terminó con un regalo sorpresa, un Google #Pixel3XL para cada uno de los asistentes.
El primer día me dejó con muy buena impresión pero el segundo fue mejor porque después de un viaje en autobús donde todos se oían felices, conociéndose e intercambiando opiniones sobre el día anterior, llegamos a las instalaciones de Google y me parecieron tan geniales como las describían en videos en Youtube o en otros post, un ambiente relajado y propicio para trabajar en armonía, donde lo mejor de todo era que tenía gran accesibilidad y eran Pet friendly. Ese día aprendimos mucho en las sesiones acerca de la importancia de nuestras contribuciones en Google Maps no solo para nuestra ciudad sino su reflejo a nivel mundial, así como muchas otras cosas en las sesiones con los Googler. Como habrán visto en las fotos, ese día también fuimos al Google Merchandise Store, en donde tenían muy buenos productos ya sea con el logotipo de #Android, #Youtube o #Google; no pude resistirme y compré algunos artículos para mi familia, amigos y una playera del recuerdo para mí.
En la mañana siguiente después del desayuno en el Hotel, volvimos a tomar los autobuses para llegar al Google Event Center, donde el chofer nos puso reggeaton y fue curioso ver como no sólo los latinos conocemos, cantamos y bailamos la canción de “Despacito”.
Las sesiones de ese día fueron de lo que más me gustó de todo el evento, donde sin duda nos dejan con muchas ganas y grandes expectativas para seguir contribuyendo para el programa; esa tarde también pudimos conocer un poco de San José y por la noche terminó con una fiesta en el Forager Tasting Room & Eatery, donde por cierto probé por primera vez la comida hindú y me llevé una muy grata experiencia, esa fiesta fue justo lo que se necesitaba despúes de ya tres días de conocernos y estar con el ánimo al máximo. Nunca había estado en una fiesta con barra libre y con personas de tantos países y fue algo maravilloso, todos bailando al ritmo de la música, así que lo disfruté mucho porque difícilmente es un escenario que se pueda volver a vivir (¿o sí? #ConnectLive2020).
Lamentablemente todo tiene un principio y un fin, así que el Brunch en el hotel fue una despedida algo emotiva e incluso triste; ahí se dieron premios a las personas más maravillosas y con puntajes inimaginables, además no sin antes Google regalarnos los preciados calcetines y otros objetos para mejorar aún más nuestras habilidades como LG. Hubo muchos abrazos, besos, fotos, regalos, nuevos amigos en Facebook, Instagram, etc. Así como algunos llegaron antes del #ConnectLive2019, otros nos fuimos después y ahí fue donde yo pude conocer lugares muy representativos de San Francisco como el Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39, Painted Ladies, Castro Street, etc.
Sin duda no puedo dejar de pensar en todo lo que me hubiera perdido sino se me hubiera ocurrido en 2016 subir mi primer foto, calificar con algunas estrellitas algún lugar o si hubiera ignorado las notificaciones para seguir contribuyendo para llegar al nivel 9 (46,203 puntos en este momento); así que a pesar de que nadie te pague por ello ni Google ni las empresas; yo seguiré teniendo un hobbie bastante entretenido como es Google Maps, siendo una orgullosa Local Guide.
