The Legendary Peking Duck

北京 / Beijing, the capital city of China is a big city with a rich Chinese culture and ancient architecture. When talking about food in Beijing, one of the famous and must try culinary is PEKING DUCK (Beijing Roast Duck). To get a tasty Peking Duck, I would like to recommend you this old and legendary restaurant in Beijing.

全聚德 / quanjude has been established since 1864 with the first branch located in 前门 / Qianmen, just like what I visited. In China, Quanjude has several branches that spread along 北京 / Beijing, 天津 / Tianjin, 山东 / Shandong, and for about 20 provinces in China. They also open their international branches at Myanmar (since 1998), Japan (since 2004), Australia (since 2008), Canada (since 2019), and France. This restaurant is well-known in China and also introducing Peking Duck to the rest of the world.

Quanjude opens everyday from 08:00-13:30, and after the break, they continue from 16:30-20:00. We came here for a lunch on a weekday, and this big restaurant was so crowded with people kept coming little by little, so that this restaurant is always crowded.

Here are what we tried :

全聚德精品烤鸭 / quanjude jingpin kaoya / Quanjude Whole Roast Duck (CNY 258)

We also got the crispy duck skin with its oil that is so tempting good! The roast duck has a smooth texture, tender, and definitely with a great taste!

葱 & 酱 / cong & jiang / Green Onions & Sauce (CNY 3)
FYI, ordering roast duck does not include complement. I recommend you to order the complement one portion for one person.

荷叶饼 / he ye bing / Thin Pancake (CNY 14)
One portion is enough for 3 persons.

When eating Peking Duck, it is not usual to eat it with rice. Replacing the rice with the thin pancake. So, how to eat the Peking Duck with then Thin Pancake?

  • First of all, you need to prepare one white thin pancake onto your plate.

  • Secondly, put 1 - 2 sliced roast duck, green onion, sauce, cucumber, garlic, and sugar. I recommend you not to put too much filling inside the thin pancake, just like I did (from the picture. I was so excited with the roast duck ? ). It is because you may find it hard to wrap it.

  • Thirdly, wrap slowly the thin pancake along with the filling. Voila! The Peking Duck is ready to enjoy! You may repeat it again and again. If you still do not get how to prepare it, the waiter / waitress will help you. They usually will ask you first whether you want them to assist you in preparing it or not. Since this restaurant is so crowded, you have to be patient to get the waiter / waitress help you. It is because one person could serve several tables at once.

Hello @Velvel ,

Amazing post! Thanks for sharing your experience at Quanjude Restaurant. I’ve tried roasted duck but I don’t think it was Peking duck. Judging by your photos, I will like it for sure, it looks so tasty. I love onion too so I will take the sauce as well.

Great photos as well! I am glad that I learned so much about this meal.

P.S. I removed the Chinese language tag as your post is written in English. :slightly_smiling_face:

Hai Teteh @Nyainurjanah kurang ngerti euy kamu ngomong apa hahaha…

Coba di Google Translate sepertinya kamu nanya halal atau tidaknya ya?

Kalau menu bebek Peking ini halal. Selain bebek Peking, di resto ini juga menyediakan menu-menu lainnya yang non halal :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi @MoniDi My pleasure :slightly_smiling_face: So glad that you could learn a new culinary lesson from my post.

The characteristic of Peking Duck could be seen from several things, like it has a red color skin (either darker and contrast red color or lighter just like in Quanjude). The meat is so smooth, clear with a little bit oily, especially the “tempting” duck skin. Then, the condiment will consist of thick black sauce and green onions.

Was the roast duck that you eat similar with Peking Duck characteristics above?

Btw, I want to ask you a question about a language tag. I mostly write a post in English, even if I add a few words in another language (for example Chinese character like this post), I cannot add the language tag, do I?

Hi @Velvel ,

Thanks for your reply. I will try to find a restaurant in my area where they cook this mouth-watering meal.

When it comes to language tags, first I would like to share with you this post How do I find posts in my preferred language? This will give you the basic information about posts that are written in languages other than English.

I suggest you add a language tag only when your post is written in that specific language. This way other Local Guides who speak it and search for posts in that language, would be able to find it easier. Sometimes Local Guides divide their posts into two sections where the first part is written in English and the second part is written in another language. This is okay but requires more effort and who doesn’t want to save some time.

Another thing that is very useful to others is to add the location of the place you are writing about. In your case, that would be the restaurant or the city where you tried this delicious Peking Duck.

Let me know if that answers you question. :slightly_smiling_face:

Now that I understand about language tags. Thank you so much @MoniDi for the clear explanation and post.

Hi @LuigiZ the selfie-master, thank you and nice to meet you here again!

Wow… you must be a VVIP member then. It seems like a private room with a private chef hahaha…

So, what part of duck that you like the most?

And , where is it? Is that in Italy?

Thank you very much @Velvel, hehe I think I’m well known now by the selfies, got awarded as well LOL. Nice to meet you again as well and very pleasure meeting you in SJ. Actually I went to search for a group selfie with you too and this is the first one I’ve found :-).

No no it isn’t a private chef hehe, however was a very nice restaurant where each table was inside a separate room, it is in Shanghai and I was brought there by some local people, so authentic preparation because in Italy I don’t think you will find it made in that way, at least I never see it.

See below the picture of the plate, exactly eating style as yours and the table opposite the chef picture where you can see me :-). I really liked it.

You are truly a selfie master @LuigiZ !

If Google could add a new badge, it would be great to reward you with “selfie-master of selfie-pro” badge, wouldn’t it @TraciC ?

I would also love to share our grup selfie back then.

A group selfie after CTW meetup at Children’s Discovery Museum, San Jose, California. Since this is a selfie, photo credit is definitely from Local Guide @LuigiZ

Wow… it must be nice to have a private room, so you could enjoy your meal while chatting, drinking, or even make some noise with you colleagues… hehehe…

You’ve travelled overseas a lot for a work. It must be great! From your business trip, what is your favorite country that you’ve ever visited?

Thanks a lot again @Velvel , very kind :-), and very nice picture you picked.

Yep special kind of restaurant, actually looks strange being in a room and staff knocking at the door and entering to serve hehe. Favorite country? Easy answer, New Zealand. I love that country and I find it very special … maybe because it is absolute far from everything else hehe. Have you ever been there? I posted a day trip on Waiheke Island on my last year visit.

@LuigiZ For dining in a private room, usually a restaurant will charge you with a minimum purchase of order. But lucky you could get a private room as the concept of the restaurant… Hehe

I’ve never been to New Zealand before, but it is listed on my travel list. If I have an opportunity someday, I would also love to visit Europe, and Italy could one of the must city to visit.

What season in Italy right now? Is there any snow there?

Thank you @Velvel and you are more than welcome here, and when you do so remember to let me know  .

Now it is winter over here, you can see snow only on mountains, not anymore on the ground if that’s to low sea level as temperature is generally warming up. However just this week we got first really cold, max 7 degrees and minimum around 2 but we are not very high here so that’s not the coldest. In Naples for example you have to consider at least a general +5 hehe.

Big hug!

I definitely will let you know @LuigiZ if I come to Italy.

What is the best season and month to visit Europe?

Yeah great @Velvel !

Actually Italy is big and we do have different weather from south to north, it all depends which places you want to visit and what you are going to do. Summer time of course is good for beaches although that’s high season and you may find lot of people on touristic spots, spring is a very good season as overall weather should be ok and temperature not so low, something is the middle is the best I think (e.g. April - July), winter might be nice for snow and cold places in the very north or high mountains.

你好 @Velvel
