THE LAST VILLAGE IN CAIRO

The GOLD island is the last village remaining in the huge city of Cairo which is still keeping its Rural character.

The island is located in the Nile river between Cairo and Giza and is habituated by around 18 thousand citizens and the big majority between them are farmers or fishermen.

Why it’s called Gold island?

Because there is a palace there called the Golden palace built there by prince Hassan Naguib the last Mamlouk prince for Egypt.

How is the life there?

The Rural character is dominating the life style there, farming and fishing are the two main source of living to 99% of the population, the only transportation available are donkeys and maybe horses, fishermen use small simple fishing boats, you can even see a woman washing her dishes and utensils on the bank of the Nile river.

What is the secret of this island? How it could keep its rural character between two of huge cities (Cairo and Giza)?

In fact the reason is simple, this village is just isolated island, completely isolated, there is no any land road nor any bridge connecting it to the world, and the only way to go there is by boat; although different governments tried to evacuate the island from its habitants to use it as touristic resort, so no any services was provided to the island and until today there is no any school, hospital or even post office in the island, but the habitants never give-up and the price of land there is now between the most expensive in Egypt.

Is it really the last village is Cairo?

Unfortunately yes, if you look to an old map of Cairo (like 25 years ago) you would notice that the map color was green, as farms surrounded the town, but as Egyptians live only at the Nile valley which is about 2% of the Egyptian surface and due to the lack of planning and the population augmentation, people started to build over the farms until they don’t exist anymore in Cairo.

Every time I drive my car on the Ring road, I notice the beauty of this island, sometimes I even stopped and took some photos, but this time I decided to investigate and tell you the story of the last village in Cairo.

If you have such story about a place, please share and tell me about it.

Comparing English with Arabic is definitely harder, @Abdoado .

I did one semester of Arabic language back in university and my teacher was actually from Egypt. Unfortunately, I don’t remember how to read, but still recognise some letters.

It was very interesting to read about the Gold island and your photos are wonderful illustrations of your story!

Are you curious to visit the island yourself? Where did you manage to take those great photos from?

@DeniGu I think our local guides community should encourage all the local guides to get engaged in this forum, not only those who can speak English, and bilingual posts may make more LGs get involved here.

Urdu is written by Arabic letters and I always found it fun to compare the two languages, but Arabic letters with Latin it seems like impossible :))

what I’m curious about is visiting the mud houses that still exist on the island, it’s very rare now to find such houses even in the country side, but I usually like to sail with Falouka around this island.

Some of the photos were token while sailing in the Nile around the island and others were token while driving my car on the ring road which crosses over the island.

If you get the chance to visit the island and to take some photos of the houses, please also share them here, @Abdoado ! I’m curious what they look like and how people organise them inside.

Some Local Guides choose to write their posts in two languages, but you don’t have to do it every time. Google Translate is available across all sections of Connect, and readers can select their preferred language.
