The "Iron Hut City"

A new steel plant, a new city. “Eisenhüttenstadt” was founded in 1950. The city was planned on the drawing board. The workers should have the best apartments. The government wanted to show that people have a good life in socialism. Today, the city is an architectural monument.

Tom Hanks visited the “Iron Hut City” when he was filming in Germany. A city guide later recalled the many questions as to whether the houses really had been built for the workers then. Hanks was especially surprised about the green courtyards.

Hello @novum_ideas ,

Thank you for sharing these beautiful photo with us, the area looks amazing!

The buildings look incredible! Are they still inhabited or mostly used as museums?

Hello @BorrisS

All buildings are still inhabited. But the City lost many citizens because of industrial structural change since 1990. As a result there were too many apartments. The buildings from the 1970s and 1980s were selected for demolition. The buildings from the period of great growth are under monument protection.
