The Iconic Olumo Rock

The Olumo rock is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Nigerian. And also one of the most popular tourist attraction in Africa as it receives patronage from hundreds of visitors every day. Located in Abeokuta the capital of ogun state in Nigeria, it is a rocky mountain that stands about 137 meters above sea level.

Legend has it that the iconic olumo rock was a sort of a natural fortress for the Egba people during the inter-tribal warfare of the 19th century. It became a sanctuary from where they monitor their enemies as they advanced. In fact the Olumo rock was a major factor in the war as the Egbas were triumphant in the warfare.

It is managed by the Ogun state tourism board. A visit to the Olumo rock will create a long lasting impression.

From the entrance visitors are expected to pay a stipulated gate fee to allow them to explore the rock- N 1000 for adults and N 500 for children. Then they are ushered into the Olumo rock tourist complex which harbors an eatery/restaurant for the delight and refreshment of visitors. There is also a museum where visitors are acquainted with the history and tradition of the land. In this museum there is an array of historical objects like beads, regalia, scepters, art works and artifacts etc which reveals their way of life. There is also a multipurpose hall for different occasions, a garden, and a large parking space which is wheelchair accessible.

And from the complex the journey to the top of the rock begins. Climbing to the top of the rock is accessible through a single stair way carved by the side of the rock. This stairway runs to the top of the rock and has an iron protector at both sides. Alternatively, there is a compartment that has an elevator and a well constructed stair ways for people on wheel chair and those with phobia in climbing mountains respectively.

Moreover, ascending the Olumo rock can be fun as visitors can relax and take some photo shots at every level or segment of the rock. On the wall of the rock are some carvings decorated with native cowries. More so, making it to the summit of the rock is a wonderful experience. At the summit of the rock you can have an unrestricted view of the ancient and rusty town of Abeokuta. You can also have a proper view of the Ogun River. The experience at the top of the Olumo rock is extra terrestrial. It is nostalgic.

However, coming down the rock is much more fun and easy as one descends the lofty rock freely. As I departed the Olumo rock complex I was leaving with a long lasting experience engraved in my memory. And I am still reliving this wonderful experience. To have this same experience like I did you must make out time and visit the olumo rock. It is ideal for the entire family, tourists and travelers, school excursions and for individuals.
