Lake Paniai Papua.
. At first, Lake Paniai[1] along with Lake Tigi and Lake Tage were called Wisselmeren. This name is attributed to the person who first discovered the three beautiful lakes in 1938, namely a Dutch pilot named Frits Julius Wissel. At that time, Frits Wissel flew across the mountains of Papua Island and saw three lakes that had beautiful views. Enchanted by its beauty, Wissel decided to land and enjoy the exoticism of the three lakes up close. In fact, during the Dutch colonial period, the name Wisselmeren was more popular than Paniai. Wisselmeren comes from the Dutch language which means Wissel lakes.
The area of Lake Paniai which reaches 14,500 hectares provides enough space for tourists to choose a location that suits their wishes when having recreation to the lake. The presence of rocks and sand on the shores of the lake, and surrounded by fairly high cliffs, adds to the attractiveness of a mainstay geotourism and ecotourism object in Paniai Regency.
