The Great Himalayan National Park

The Great Himalayan National park is a well preserved ecosystem located near kullu & manali in the state of Himachal pradesh, India.

The park is home to some of the rarest himalayan mammals like the Himalayan brown bear, Himalayan black bear, Himalayan Thar, Snow leopard.

The park is also home to a wide variety of bird species including the Himalayan monal and western Tragopan .

What makes this park even more special is the fact that one can explore it by a trek spanning anything between 2-15days, a rare priveledge in a country like India.

Outside the monsoon and winter months when the climate is a little extreme, its best to choose May or June to escape the torrid climate of the plains of India. You may even choose the month of April to observe the wildlife having refuge in lower altitude, or the month of October to enjoy the colors of autumn.

Hi @A_Wanderers_Trail ,

Thanks for sharing this post. The park looks amazing! When was this photo taken? It seems it’s warmer by the look of your gear? Isn’t it dangerous to go hiking there with all the wild animals or they have guided tours?

I see you’re using a professional camera? Can you tell us more what it is and what kind of photos you like to capture?

Hey @DanniS

I went in the month of May. It’s summer here in India at the time. So temperatures are generally on the higher side. But the altitude calls for lower temperatures and chilly breeze.

Either way, all the trekking makes you warm and sweaty. Hence the gear.

These are guided tours. And the wild animals I mentioned are rarely found at the altitude we were at during summer months. The animals only come to lower altitudes to escape the extreme winters.

The above picture was clicked on an iPhone. I use a cannon 1200d otherwise. Mostly to capture anything that intrigues me while I’m travelling.

@A_Wanderers_Trail Sounds great! It’s probably quite challenging to do hikes there as it can reach really high levels, right? My highest has been close to 3000 m and it was tough. Looking forward to see more from you.

Thanks for sharing great post from Himalayas, i like to read your post.

Actually my hometown is Chamba, Himachal Pradesh and good to see that you write about my state.

Do you like trekking in Himalayas ?

Do you live there or just go there for travelling ?

What other activities you perform in Himalayas ?

I love this kind of place @A_Wanderers_Trail . Judging from the vegetation shown in your great photo, my guess is that this is between 3200 and 3500 metres.

Hey! @DanniS

Yes, the other trails take you to very high altitudes. It can get very strenuous. The one I did was around 3300m though. :

Hey @IshantHP_ig

You’re very lucky to be living so close to the mountains! I’m from Bengaluru, Karnataka. I love exploring the mountains and have been frequently visiting himachal pradesh. It’s a beautiful state with such lovely people.

Ive been on a couple of other treks like brahmatal, valley of flowers, etc

Other than that I’ve also tried a couple of adventure sports that are available at Kullu. But mostly, I enjoy backpacking around our country.
