…continued from part 1
We were warmly welcome to the spacious hotel. We passed through expanse restaurant just by the road and through to the reception. The receptionist greeted us and requested for our passports. I handed them over to him without much thought. After entering our information to his computer. He gave us the electronic access card. He was to accompany us to the room, when suddenly he enquired if I speak English. I said yes. Then, He said pass through the pool area into the lounge and turn left, you would see a lift. Press open and enter.
Your room is on the first floor. it was room 2109. We walked straight as he instructed and without much drama, we got to the room. It is a standard room.
Needless to say, we were hungry, we quickly dropped the luggage and headed straight for the dinning. I only remembered requesting for rice and chicken. After the dinner, we went back to room and crashed to the bed.
The next day was full of excitement. The dawn came with a bright sunlight. I went out to the balcony to have my first view of the area. After I was satisfied, I returned inside the room, and checked for the breakfast time. My partner was busy selecting her swimming suite. I could see she was eager to swim in the Mediterranean Sea more than I do.
After she was convinced as to what to wear, we headed for the dining area. Our first breakfast was delicious and tasty. we congratulated ourselves for making the right choice of hotel. I requested omelet and sausages. After pleasing myself, I was ready to go anywhere.
We stepped out of the hotel to the road and crossed to Abdurrahman Alaettinoğl Park which is just across
the road from our hotel. We walked slowly. Quietly admiring the beautiful park. Towards the end of the park, the sea came into horizon. The long-awaited scene of the sea made us quickened our step until we were walking on the Damlataş beach sand.
We changed into swimming wears and were passionate at getting into the sea.
I cautiously walked into the tide. The wave surged at us. I held my partner’s hand. We both stepped farther. Then I slipped, I was not expecting to slip on a beach! I was not on a sand and was now actually on slippery rocky plate. As this point, I became demoralized, I was not yet an excellent swimmer.
For a second, the fear of drowning troubled me deeply. I tried to shrug it over and stood again on my feet.
My partner came trying to give me support. I told her I would be fine and could sort myself out. She swarm ahead into deep sea …
When she left, I was alone. I tried to stamp my feet on the slippery rock again and at the same time keeping my balance against the tide. Notwithstanding, I still struggled to maintain a balance.
Realizing It was a fruitless endeavour trying to stand on slippery rock, I took a dive into the water. Diving is very convenient for me. It is the first skill I mastered in my swimming lessons. As could not dive for long without oxygen supplies, I stepped out of the water again.
Accidentally, my leg fell into a hole. I fell into the water. While struggling to come out, I hit another foot at a rock. And by the time I wobbled out of the water, both of my feet were hurt. I returned to the beach, sat down and was nursing my wound. Regret filled my heart. Why did we come to this beach? couldn’t we go somewhere else?
I became calm afterward and accepted the situation; I was not going to swimming in this water.
I was there all the while under down the scorching sunlight.
I soon regained my enthusiasm and began to watch tourist boats which were sailing on the sea. Occasionally my eyes caught sight of women in bikini. Then I quickly turn my face away. Gazing at this moment was unhealthy habit. I have learnt to turn my face away. Few hours of boredom had passed, when my partner came out of the water. I told her I had decided to go to the hotel’s swimming pool as it would be more easy for me. She agreed to my request. So, we walked back to the hotel and went for the pool area. She advised I enter the pool from the other shallow end. I walked to the end and entered the water through the stairs. And continue my swimming practice as I prefer to call it.
Time for lunch; All you can eat and drink.
We came out of the pool and straight to the dinning. I have been to many hotels just like anyone else and to places sumptuous buffet were on offered. I must say Kahya hotel buffet is special. Many hotels have tricks of controlling how much a guest eat. At Kahya, there was no restrain neither stigma. We were all free to eat as much as we want. The food never finished.
As for me, I learnt a hard lesson many years back. I once ate and drank so much that I could not sleep throughout the night. The unpleasant experience had thought me a life lesson; Over eating does not worth it.
Kahya hotel offered varieties food on the menu. Rice, fried potatoes, chicken, meat, fish etc. There is also a salad stand which is equally superb. hundreds of salads were on the stand. Many I have not seen before .The confectionary stand is my favourite. I do have cravings for sweet things. Puddling, cakes, ice cream of different varieties were display. and lastly the bar stand, it is the most generous. While other section only open two hours for a meal. The bar run sixteen hours. Red and white wine, juice and soda, all were served generously.
After the rich lunch, and I felt so drowsy. I wouldn’t be able to do anything again. I went back to my room
to have good rest. For the rest of the day, I stayed confined to my room.
The Tuesday Muslim Bazaar Market.
My partner was eager to by Turkish fruits for herself and for many friends who had requested her. Still, we did not know where the market was located. We asked people who had stayed longer than us in the hotel.
Help soon came our way, we were directed to walk to the second street, there we would see a pharmacy.
We should follow the road adjacent to the pharmacy and it would lead us to the market.
After sun set on Tuesday 25th August. We decided to go in search of the market. locating the pharmacy was simple enough. Once we were beside it, we simply followed the road described to us in the hotel. After a while, we saw returning Russian tourist coming with heavy polythene bags. We were certain they were all coming back from the market.
Certainly, we won’t get lost. We near a place that resemble the market we were searching, other tourist also trickled in from other directions, one after the other.
The market is very big indeed. Sellers and buyers were everywhere haggling over prices. Brightly coloured fruits lined the walkways. Scents from spices rent the air. The scene reminded me of medieval Arabian Market. The kind I watched in movies.
The experience was so lovely that I didn’t want to leave the market.
After we exhausted ourselves with bargainings, we left for to a typical Turkish tea and spice shop.
The shop owner was so generous that he offered us cups of tea. We drank his tea and wish him well.
We slowly walked out of the market and by this time my rucksack was heavy with products.
The day we climbed Alanya Kalesi Fortress.
The Alanya mountain is visible in all direction. No one would fail to notice it. It is right at the center of the city.
It was sight of the fortress over the mountain that caught my attention on the second day of our arrival and also the cable car that take passengers from the street to the mountain.
The brightly lit cable car or the funicular as Russian preferred to call it was so brilliant at night. We were mesmerized by it.
We decided we would take the cable car to the fortress the next day .
On the day we were to visit the fortress, I dressed smartly for a reason I couldn’t understand. Perhaps I was just trying to match up with partner floral gown. I felt such elaborate dressing was unnecessary for this kind of visitation.
So, we walked to the ALANYA TELEFERİK A.Ş. cable car station where we bought a return ticket at 33 lira each. A dollar was selling for seven lira that day. The conductor would not want me to get inside the cable car with my corn.
Earlier, before we reached the station, I had bought a boiled corn from a street vendor and was eating at the station. It was an age I last tasted a corn. I could not resist the urge not to eat it at the moment.
Finally, it was out turn to board the cable car. I was the first to enter and cautiously look back, just to make sure that my partner did not slip a leg in the space between the platform and the car. All went well. We were now in the car.
A second had passed and door automatically closed in front of us. We were ascending to the top of the hill. The window of the car provided us an amazing view of the city, to the left is the Mediterranean and the right a panoramic of Alanya. An amazing view and but also a thrilling experience.
In no time we made it to the top of the mountain. When we stepped out, I was astounded at this site of an ancient civilization. The fortress which was built at the height of the roman empire. It is a window to the past.
We walked on the cobble stone from one medieval gate to the other on the next level till we got to the mosque, It was just beautiful.

After passing the mosque, we walk to the viaduct. It left me with much imagination. I marveled at the engineering of the past.
How were they able to construct all this structures ?
We further slowly climbed through the narrow steps to the front side of the fortress, where canons , which were used to defend the city in the past were stationed.
We waited till it was dark.
And finally returned to the cable car station and from there we travelled down to the street and returned fulfilled back to our hotel.
