The Chendamangalam Jewish Synagogue (ചേന്ദമംഗലം ജൂതപള്ളി)

Kerala is one of the Indian states where the Jewish population has created a strong presence. Their presence can still be felt in Kochi, where they continued to engage in a range of business activities. The Jewish community’s place of worship, known as a synagogue, is one of the region’s most prominent landmarks. They were plentiful in Kochi and Kodungallur, an old port city near to kochi

Aside from the well-known synagogue in Kochi’s Mattanchery, the one in North Paravur’s Chennamangalam is one of the largest, having been built 175 years ago. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Kerala State Archaeology Department and financial help from Kerala Tourism, the synagogue was recently restored to its former splendour. The state department of archaeology has designated it as a protected monument.

The synagogue at Chennamangalam is built in the style of traditional Kerala architecture and employs modern construction techniques. The towering altar, which stands out for its elaborate artwork, is surely one of the synagogue’s visual highlights. The synagogue has a lofty roof, which at first glance suggests the difficulties that the craftsmen may have had while repairing it. The roof’s ceiling is decorated with a vividly coloured checkered pattern, and the roof is supported by massive wooden beams.

Another feature of this synagogue is a wooden balcony with ornately carved balusters and handrails. A separate balcony is reserved for women only. A spiral wooden stairway leads to this balcony, which is a work of art in wood.

Visitors to the Chennamangalam synagogue with an interest in ancient architecture can also visit the Paliam Palace, which was originally the home of the Paliath Achans, the erstwhile rulers of Kochi’s Prime Ministers. This palace has historic documents and treasures on display.

The Vypeenkotta Seminary, constructed by the Portuguese in the 16th century, is another nearby attraction. Only the ruins of the seminary may be seen presently. The synagogue is now a Muziris heritage project protected monument.
