Origin of betel nut:
The place of origin of betel is probably the Philippines and the Nicobar Islands. The plant is highly drought sensitive and requires irrigation for cultivation if the annual rainfall is less than 1250 mm. Although it grows in different types of soils, mud-loam soils are more suitable. There is a favorable climate for betel cultivation all over Bangladesh. The total area under betel cultivation in this country is about 36,500 hectares. The average yield per hectare is 3.45 metric tons and the total production for the whole year is about 26,500 metric tons.
Place of Origin of Bangladesh:
Although less is cultivated in all the districts, the lion’s share of betel is produced in Barisal, Rangamati, Noakhali, Laxmipur and Khulna. Besides, betel trees are grown in many houses in the villages. Although only betel can be chewed, it is customary to eat chopped betel with drink. There is a special practice of drinking after meals and in almost all festivals in Bangladesh.
Medicinal properties:
Betel nut stimulant and antiseptic. To cure diarrhea, it is recommended to take 10-15 grains of betel nut powder every 3-4 hours. Betel nut is beneficial in urinary incontinence and possibly aphrodisiac. Supari stops bleeding gums. Ghasa-betel is effective in controlling roundworms and tapeworms.
