There’s something fancinating about haunted places. Maybe its an omen of how the Earth might look like when man disapears from its surface - a reminder of mortality and ephemere existance of human creations. Whatever it is that make them fascinating, they can be beautiful. Do you have some in your city? Please share your pictures of it with us! I’ll begin with a gate to what should have been a fun park.
Hello
I do have one such place I explored last year.
These are a few pictures from Waikune Prison which was a minimum security prison opened in 1921. It resides in remote area below a looming Mt Ruapehu on SH4.
It was closed and has been abandoned since around 1986 due to 3 possible reasons given to me.
- Around the mid-1980 the prison buildings and infrastructure needed an upgrade and a large investment to do so. The government at the time, after a select committee hearing, decided to close the facility due to lack of funds.
- There was a community outcry about how far families had to travel / couldn’t travel to visit the inmates due to how isolated the prison was.
- Asbestos was found within some of the roofs within the prison. The inmates were slowly removing it ( see Cell block 2 ) and while doing this the prison was slowly closed down due to lack of funds etc ( from the Caretaker onsite ).
I also have this video of the grounds ( Waikune Prison Part One )
Hi @CaptainHook , it is (also) my job to deal with decaying buildings and unfortunately it’s not (always) a fun thing for me.
Without revealing where this place actually is (as we have official proceedings with the owner), will share a few 360 photos of a palace here (they are of course not on SV - they re only for our own documentation):

Wow, you’ve made me curiocus @Csaba , what is your job? (if not secret ;-))
Hi @CaptainHook , I work for our national cultural heritage services (more exactly it’s something like an authority) and we deal with archaeological sites as well as listed (protected, historic) buildings. Also, some other colleagues (who do not deal with heritage here) deal with “simple” building that decayed so much that they are dangerous already.
So my job is often beautiful but occasionally rather said when seeing such a once nice, now ruinous, 19th century palace.
This is indeed a very important job!
I wish all of the sites you treat awaits a happy destiny.
