Hi! My name is Rolla from Toronto, Canada. As a person who loves to travel, I’ve found that the Local Guide community is better than any other travel websites I’ve used in the past.
As a Local Guide, the most interesting thing I’ve done is explore the corners of cities that aren’t as touristy, and try local dishes I may have otherwise missed out on! In my circle of friends, I’ve become the go-to person when it comes to recommending must-do and must-eats when travelling.
Last summer, when I explored Portugal on my own, I decided to use Google Maps to find the best places to visit and the best places to try local cuisine. While travelling to Porto and Lisbon, I made sure to note and save all my locations so that I could write reviews to help my fellow Local Guides plan their own awesome trips!
When I do visit the more touristy, crowded places, I use the Local Guides program for insider tips on the best times to visit a specific spot, so that I can make the most out of my day instead of wasting time in long lineups! For example, I planned an entire day in Porto using Local Guides’ tips to visit the Livraria Lello without having to wait in line!
What part of travelling is the best? Food! When I travel, I try to eat where the locals eat so that I could get the most authentic experience during my trip. The Local Guides program helps me find the hidden gems where the locals gather and socialize over the most delectable dishes.
One of my most notable meals in Porto, Portugal was at Casa Guedes trying the famous Bifana sandwich, which I found thanks to the Local Guides program!
The Local Guides program helps me keep track of where I travel so that I could make recommendations after. More importantly, it’s a great way to help local businesses that may not be as popular get the recognition they deserve!
While I write this in self-isolation, I am daydreaming of the day that I get to start planning my next adventure using the Local Guides program. I can’t wait!
