The Beauty of Mehendi, An Ancient & Traditional Body Art Form

Mehendi is a body art form that dates back hundreds of years. It has withstood the passage of time and is extremely popular even today. It forms an integral part of Indian Weddings as well as festivals. Mehendi has decorative as well as auspicious facets.

Mehendi is made out of the dried leaves of the Lawsonia inermis plant.

It is common belief that the darker the color of the Mehendi the luckier it is for the bride.

Once the applied Mehendi has dried up it is scraped off. It takes on a darker hue by the next day.

Bridal Mehendi artists are booked months in advance of a Wedding Mehendi Ceremony. Beauty parlors offer Mehendi application services but the best of all are who I call the “Nano vendors”. These enterprising artists operate off the pavements by setting up small stools where they and the customers can sit and get Mehendi applied. They have some amazing designs, at reasonable prices, conveniently available and offer great unbeatable service.

Ready made Mehendi is available in the markets in India and can easily be used. Sometimes users add eucalyptus oil, clove oil, lemon juice, turmeric, or coffee powder to it to improve its effect. The paste is poured into a plastic cone and a tiny hole cut open when it is required to be used. Rather like a nozzle for decorating cupcakes!

I love it! there is also a myth that; “the darker a bride’s henna, the greater her husband’s love for her”. So, after the application, if a bride’s henna turns up with a darker hue, it means her husband loves her very much.

I am thinking; “You are Chinese, you live in Mississipi” about the former, I can’t be so sure, but, about the latter I know I am 100% correct, so,

You know what I am thinking, right?

About the headgear tutorial, you asked for, I am still preparing it…

It will be stunning and dedicated to you! @yagokd

Oooh I see! I heard that in the Soap opera; “Gangaa”, it was the ‘husband’ I heard.

Ooh, I misunderstood, Now I know you are Indian.

Chai! You are putting me on the spot :see_no_evil: :see_no_evil: :see_no_evil:

I will work on it but before then, I will do a Post after which we could have the meet up. Will that be okay? @yagokd

From the post, you will be able to choose the style you like most, then we can center our Meetup around that particular style, is that okay?

My friends raise their eyebrows at me for doing that! but I love them! :see_no_evil:

and I cannot even deny it!

  • I love the Pictures (so bright and colourful except the war ones)
  • I love the language; the language is clean! No swear words and all that
  • I love the infiltration of culture
  • I love the devotions
  • I love that good always prevails over evil
  • I like that they are easy to watch :see_no_evil: many of them have basically same storyline with different acts.

Hi @yagokd

Really amazing post about our culture. Here in Tamil Nadu we used to grind the leaves and apply. Now we also follow this way of applying Mehedi.

@yagokd I made this on my sister’s hand yesterday!
