The beauty of being a Poet :How I Organised the first Poetry Slam in Awka.

My name is Chisom Onyinyechukwu Udeoba and by this time last week i was scared and worried because of the poetry slam i was organising. Now that is part my story because the event took place on Saturday and yes, it was a success. @AlexaAC

How it happened :

It started from being an idea that just dropped to being a reality. We sent out invites to people and social media came in handy too . Some people were so interested while some weren’t but on Saturday the hall was amazingly full and the people that came enjoyed every bit of it . We had fourteen contenders and finally one winner . There was music both local and classical, art and more.

Before the event my team and i went to some secondary schools to talk to them and create a readers and writers club which will help train the children and also we invited some of the students and their teachers to come around and learn.

On the event day, I was the Sacrificial spoken word poet. There were four judges and three winners. The Spoken word poets used their words to wow the audience including first time performers and those that have been practising for years. The winners ;CP Kings , Noble W and Favour who came in from Asaba, Awka and Ifite respectively went home with a lot of cash and book prizes .

Till today, people are still talking about the event and asking about the next one, The poems rendered on that stage touched a lot of people , someone actually cried and a lady that just came around unwillingly was full of smiles at the end and promised to never miss the next . More people want to be part of it and this clearly shows that it is really nice to initiate an idea and see that it comes to reality not minding the challenges we face.

It was really nice organising the first poetry slam in Anambra State it was an awesome feat and i am glad that it was a success. Being a Poet is really beautiful.

I am not a fan of poetry but when I see good poems that captivates me just like books of stories, I just can’t let it pass by! Nice one and a good event. Be proud of yourself and we local guides are proud of you.
