Makassar is one of the beautiful place that I ever visited, especially the sunset. Located in the west of Celebes island, Indonesia, Makassar is the capital city of South Celebes or Indonesian said that South Sulawesi.
As the city with full of histories in Indonesia, there are many historical building here, which is also close to the port on the west of the city. One of them is Fort Rotterdam which was build on since Holland era here hundred years ago.
Fort Rotterdam building will take you back to the past when you see everything around. The building, the statue, post office, and old picture that exist for hundred years.
Another history building, you also can visit the West Irian Monument, the tall monument with full of history from the people in Irian Island, now the people called the island as Papua.
After you learn the history of Makassar city, you can go to Karebosi Mall which is very close from Fort Rotterdam, it is just about 5 to 10 minutes by motorbike or car and you can find shopping center that is very complete place to shop, start from clothing, electronic, and the food. Don’t forget to try Soto Makassar, it is very delicious.
After you finish shopping and eating, just go across the Karebosi Mall, enjoy and Hang out with your friends in Karebosi field as the biggest public space in Makassar and feel the peace there, everyone will smile at you.
On the afternoon, move to Losari Beach, 5 minutes from Karebosi. Enjoy the sunset there with Pisang Epe, the traditional food from Bugis ethnic, the original ethnic from Makassar.
If you want to killing your stress out, and looking for the spot that is very quiet place, away from the crowds, you can go across the island from Makassar Port, not so far from Losari Beach. There are 3 famous islands with very beautiful view, the Khayangan Island, Lae lae island, and Kodingarengkeke Island.
For me, Khayangan Island is enough, I can swimming, snorkeling and camping with my family and friends with the view of Makassar city. There is also the small resort to stay, and enjoy the campfire, but don’t forget keep it clean after you do party.
One of the most questions that I ever got from another member of Google Local Guide, is the access from Sultan Hasanudin Airport to the city center of Makassar. Actually there are 2 options, you can use taxi or the bus (people said it is Damri), it takes about 40 minutes to 1 hour by toll road. For me, as a backpacker and low cost traveler, I used Bus Damri because the cost is only 25 thousand rupiahs, if you used taxi it will be 4 times more expensive.
Don’t use online driver like Grab or Gojek, because their regulations is prohibit using online drivers around the airport.
Hope you can enjoy the beautiful sunset and historical city in Makassar
