In the magical lagoon of Xochimilco, survives the ajolote (axolotl), a curious animal that the ancestral inhabitants considered a divinity that inhabited the waters of the lagoons of the Valley of Mexico. It is a fascinating amphibian, which remains in its larval stage throughout its life, and has the amazing ability to regenerate its legs and other organs. It is currently a protected species and it is only possible to see this biological relic in the nurseries of Xochimilco. Due to its cultural relevance, it has become the main character of the 50 peso bills issued by the Bank of Mexico (see photo below).
