A Baoli or stepwell is located within the premises of the Purana Quila or the Old Fort in Delhi. The stepwell was a source of water for the inhabitants of the fort given the height on which the fort is built, the groundwater would have been quite far down, therefore necessitating the construction of this deep well.
The structure appears to be designed to keep the water covered, so as to keep it clean and probably also to minimize evaporation. A narrow flight of 100+ steps, separated by nearly 8 landings that could be seen from the to and going down to a depth of more than 20 meters, gave access to the water.
The stepwell was closed for visitors when I visited the fort last week and from what I could see in the little sunlight that could reach the position of each landing is marked by recessed niches in the side walls. Also, a series of gradually receding arches formed the roof. At the far end was a circular well, and water could also have been drawn up with a bucket from this well.
The stepwell is huge and the surrounding area is well maintained with palm trees and lush green lawns making it a nice destination for family and friends.
Have you been to a source of water that has historic importance? IтАЩd be interested in knowing your experiences.
Until thenтАж Happy Guiding ?
