As an ice-cream lover, wherever I go, I always look up the best ice-cream place in the area, even before eating places. So how can I miss it when I was planning my trip to California, though the “California” here only includes San Francisco and Los Angeles. (I know, I know. Don’t judge me. I’m just a tourist with very limited time here.)
The time I visited there was November (yes, last month), and the weather then was already quite chilly. But nothing can stop an ice-cream lover go to get her/his beloved ice-cream. So voila! Here’s my ice-cream list in California!
Located in the area of Haight-Ashbury, the Ice Cream Bar is an old-fashioned soda fountain with various ice-cream options, from original ice-cream, sundaes, milkshakes, to ice-cream sandwiches and cakes. And they also have vegan options. If you want to experience something retro and sweet, here’s the place.
Undoubtedly, Salt & Straw is one of the most popular ice-cream brands in California, though it’s originally from Portland. Before I planned the trip, I had already heard this place from my friend, so it’s a must-visit for me. And with this high expectation, it didn’t disappoint me.
It’s an Italian gelato place located in Broadway Arcade Lobby, a small but classic-looking food court in LA. My friend and I spotted it after having tacos at Guisados, one of the best taco places in town. After having something spicy, we’d like to have some desserts. And voila! Gelateria Uli is what we saw. Of course, we checked its rating and reviews before we went. The gelato did deserve the high rating it holds (4.7 with over 200 ratings), and the staff is very kind.
Are you still in San Francisco @ChanneLing ? One of my favorite ice cream place is Humprey Slocombe - you can get it from the Ferry building. Try the Secret Breakfast flavor
Thanks so much for your amazing post and for sharing these great ice cream places in California. I prefer ice cream rather than gelato and I would definitely try the Rose sorbet and Stracciatella that you shared. The honey lavender also looks amazing!
Here is another post on Connect for great ice cream places and where the National ice cream is celebrated around the world. I hope you’ll enjoy reading it.
Thank you for the comment! I wish I were still there in California enjoying the sunshine, but no, I already flew back to work. Hope I could make another visit soon!
Humprey Slocombe! I think I saw it in the Ferry Building, but sadly, I didn’t try it (I should’ve tried!). The photos on its Google Maps reviews look nice. And I miss ice-cream places in California (and many other places) so much. It’s hard to find a fine one in Taipei. Ice shops here are more on shaved ice, instead of ice-cream or sorbet. Have you ever tried shaved ice?
Thank you for the comment. I’m glad you enjoyed the post.
I’m more an ice-cream person when it comes to vanilla-based or chocolate-based flavors since the creaminess is vital for me. But if it’s about fruits, gelato will be my preference. What’s your ultimate favorite flavor by the way? For me, vanilla, Stracciatella, and lemon!
The post link you shared seems not working. It shows ERR_TUNNEL_CONNECTION_FAILED when I open it.
Amazing post, @ChanneLing . I love ice cream. Here in Brazil, the temperatures now are higher than usual, so every day is an invite for ice cream. My favorite flavor is flake (I know, it is not original hehe), but I always like to try different options.
@KatyaL I couldn’t follow your link. It seems that it is broken.
Thank you for the comment. And yes, every day is an ice-cream day. I like having ice-cream in winter too! Sadly, not every ice-cream place opens in winter. Most independent handmade ice-cream shops in Canada, the US, or Europe are closed in wintertime.
What’s flake by the way? Is that a type of ice-cream or is it a flavor?
I also like vanilla and Stracciatella flavor, but I would go for lavender or coconut as well. Actually any type of ice cream is ok for me, even the ones with pieces of fruits inside (like pineapple). Thanks for checking the link, it should be working right now.
The first place on the list, Berthillon Glacieris defo my favorite ice-cream place in France and a must-go for me every time I visit Paris. Have you tried it? If not, it’s worth a visit!
My favorite flavor of theirs is blood orange sorbet. I’ve tried to find a similar flavor in many other ice-cream places but sadly couldn’t.
I’ve been in Paris a few years back on a business trip, but unfortunately I didn’t go to Berthillon Glacier. I managed to try the french croissants and the chocolate mousse, and they were awesome! It’s great that you’re sharing your experience and favorite flavors of ice cream with us. I do appreciate that and will keep it as a tip for my next visit to Paris.
Paris (or France) is undoubtedly a dream destination for all bread and dessert teeth. And my favorite dessert is Mont Blanc and Tarte Au Citron (lemon tart). Eclair is a popular one too! Oh my, these jewelry-like sweets make me miss France so much!
