Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day, a day that aims to spread the word about the need for digital access and inclusion for people with disabilities. On this occasion, we want to give thanks to all the incredible Local Guides who contribute to accessibility on Google Maps and in their community.
You might be adding a note to your reviews about a place’s accessibility features or sharing a photo of a wheelchair ramp or a braille menu. You might be updating the accessibility attributes in the “About” section of a business on Maps or answering accessibility questions. You might be organizing accessibility meet-ups or spreading awareness about the need for equal access to places in your area.
Whatever your contribution, we thank you for it!
One such contributor is @Julietezego , a Local Guides Level 8 from Nigeria. Juliet joined the program after connecting with @EmekaUlor at a local conference and the Federal University of Technology Owerri, where he teaches and she studies.
“I noticed that, on campus, accessibility is not adequately considered, and this may be the reason many students with disabilities do not go to universities. So when I [became a Local Guide] and saw what the One Accessibility team is doing, I decided to join them to assist my community and school by adding information about accessibility features in my contributions and by creating awareness among fellow students,” shares Juliet.
Juliet likes to add new places on Google Maps, highlighting wheelchair access through her reviews and photos. She says that learning from experienced Accessibility Champions like Emeka, @ErmesT , @ChinonsoOnukwugha , and @Jesi and participating in meet-ups has helped her find her passion and build confidence.
“The Local Guides program has exposed me to various opportunities and networks. I appreciate Emeka’s efforts towards starting the Local Guides community at university and the progress we are making.”
Thank you, Juliet, and everyone who maps accessibility! Do you share accessibility information on Google Maps? Show us your favorite contribution in the comments below.
