I discovered the Local Guides program approximately 10 months ago, and even my smallest explorations in the city have become more exciting and fulfilling since then. To me, being a Local Guide means making genuine connections, being at the present moment, and showing mutual appreciation.
Real connections are everything, especially when you are trying to make a new place your home. I have been to lots of restaurants in Copenhagen since I moved here, but those visits have become more personal and genuine after I discovered Local Guides. Last summer, my brother visited me in Copenhagen and I took him to my favorite local pizzeria. That evening, I mentioned the owner about Local Guides and told him I would leave a review for them, because I was very satisfied with their service, taste and welcoming attitude. This led to a lovely chat for the next half an hour, the owner treating us to a delicious tiramisu, my brother having a total local experience, and us having a great time. It was going to be one of my very first reviews as a Local Guide, and I was honestly surprised how it enabled me to connect in such a warm way with a local business owner.
Since I became a local guide, I’m much more observant about my local experiences and surroundings. Sometimes, I stop whatever I’m doing (and sometimes even be late to wherever I am going) just to take photographs, because I know that good photos lead to more views, and more views mean more people getting guidance! This possibility of reaching out to more people motivates me to be more mindful of those around me. Sometimes, I even meet people, while I try to capture the present moment for Local Guides. Once, I met an old guy at a boat bar in Copenhagen, just because he liked my enthusiasm about taking photos, and wasn’t hesitant to pose for one of them. I ended up having a nice photo with him smiling in it!
Some months ago, my friend took me to a local pasta place in Copenhagen. At the end of the evening; I was surprised that they were such a small, modest, and affordable place; yet they worked so hard in the kitchen (you could actually see!) and delivered super delicious pasta. Soon after, I wrote a review for them, and shared my review on a social media platform, also tagging them. I really wanted more people to know about their small business of good quality. I didn’t expect it, but I got an answer from them saying, “Wow, thank you so much!”. Today, they are busier than ever, you cannot even get a seat without waiting for it! I felt so happy after this incident, because I felt that I made an impact on their business. Through Local Guides, I could show my appreciation towards the value they provided, and they reciprocated. Moments like these remind me that I live in a connected community where gratitude is very much welcomed and valued.
I’m so happy to already have collected so many good memories through being a Local Guide. Here is to many more!
