Before being a Google Local Guide, I was a Google Maps user. Now I’m both of them! In fact I use Google Maps almost every day because whenever I want to find some information about a store, ATM or other services, I use Maps App.
When I don´t know a place especially on holidays, I like to explore it first on Maps. So, at some point, I realized that there were places which have not been identified so I’ve became interested in finding these new places, identify and add pictures of them. This way I can help local stores with fair trade and local product on one side, and on the other side, help people like me that are looking for different and/or specific places, like the tourists that visit Madeira Island, where I live.
I guess that my passion comes from my grandfather, which I never met. He was a cartographer in the 30s and 40s in past century. He traveled deep into the heart of Angola to find small villages that didn’t exist on the map at that time. He also discovered that there were roads that didn’t exist on the maps, and as part of his job, he had to register them to be part of the official map of the country. Today he would be certainly a Google Local Guide!
On the other hand, I love sharing information and answering questions about accessibility. In fact, being a special needs teacher makes this my main focus. And when I talk about accessibility, I don’t mean only people whit disabilities, I mean everyone that may need such information, like people with small children carrying prams or elderly people with mobility problems.
So, what I love to share as Local Guide are new places and accessibility information. Because I feel that helping people is the most important part of my role as Local Guide. A program made from people to people. Without people none of this would have sense!
And that’s why, as a Maps user, I have to thank all Local Guides Collaborators that make my life easier in my daily searches.
THANK YOU!
