Thali - A South Asia Dish

Greeting dear LG Friends,

In this post, I am sharing my recent experience in Hotel SARAVANA BHAVAN, Rajiv Chowk, New Delhi .

After an official trip at Delhi, I went to have lunch at Saravanan Bhavan. I waited outside for vacant seat for about 10 minutes and finally I got a seat to have lunch. Then I ordered South Indian Thali which cost Rs.250…

There are 2 variant in SouthIndian Thali with a small difference. One with more rice instead of Roti and other with a small bowl of rice with Roti/ Puri.

I selected the first one as I wanted to have more rice. The picture is attached below.

The quantity is more than sufficient and the taste and quality of food is outstanding. So I prefer this place to have a South Indian Food during Delhi visit.

Similar food(Sadya ) is served in South India(Especially in Kerala/ Kanyakumari District) for any festival occasion/ marriage functions. Mostly @TravellerG could had more experience with this. And I am attaching one photo of the same during my friends marriage in Kerala.

Lets see some details about Saravana Bhavan Hotel which will help you in future.

Another great post, my dear friend @SachinVijayan ,

Thanks for tagging me in your post.

Yes, in South India, we have very similar culture… right?

Sadya is a must for almost all ceremonies & mostly it is served on bandana leaf.

Though there are different Saravana Bhavan restaurants in different parts of the world and this one is the most official. Most of the places you get these options with or without Chapati/Poori.

However, I had a very bitter experience at one of the Saravana Bhavan restaurants on Chennai - Bangalore National highway!

I’m adding another Thalli meals photo for your valuable companionship.

Hope you will like this.

Excellent post @SachinVijayan and photo is excellent too.

I am happy to know that you could visit a Sarvanana Bhavan in Delhi - Thank you for sharing the Google Maps link.

Also, I like the photo shared by @TravellerG with the platter on a banana leaf - wholesome food and great variety.

This tradition is alive in Maharashtra also and Banana leaf is used commonly for home food, especially during festivals.

Here is a post that I wrote a few years ago, hope you like it:

Thanks for your valuable words and photo, @TravellerG

In some city’s this culture is coming down or replaced by Paper Banana Leaf and plastic plates

My parents used to tell that eating in banana leaf is healthier. But the real fact of polyphenols (a micronutrient) as mentioned by @TusharSuradkar is not known to many people. This info is new for me.

You are a genuine artist and photographer, that why you find beauty in such shots…

In fact, I forgot to rotate the banana leaf a bit to coincide with the top corner… Sorry…

Thanks for your valuable companionship, my very dear @Rohan10

Hello, dear friend @SachinVijayan .

Of course, elders spoke about the value of eating food in banana leaf, may not be technically - more generally.

Technical terms like micronutrients, came out recently.

Thanks for sharing your feelings…

Also happy that you liked the photo.

All the best
