Temple No. 3, Ruins of Nalanda Mahavihara, Bargaon, Nalanda, Bihar

Patience and seriousness are both required to see and understand the Nalanda ruins. When we enter, the most famous monument of Nalanda is situated right next to Monastery No.1 in the order of the monasteries and this is Temple No. 3, whose image is known to the whole world.

According to archaeological analysts, this magnificent structure was built in 7 phases, in which the first 3 phases built were small and hidden. While the 4 phases visible on the surface are extensive structures. The three separate staircases that can be seen on the north side belong to the fifth, sixth and seventh phases respectively. The fifth phase, which is dated to the 6th century on the basis of architecture and art, is well preserved. Its niches have beautiful stucco images of Buddha and Bodhisattvas. Only two of the decorative solid towers at the four corners remain. The plan of the other temples is east-facing but this one is north-facing. There are indications of a Buddha statue in the temple chamber above. A large number of votive stupas and small temples have been built by devotees from time to time around this temple.

My suggestion for visitors and tourists is to see the whole temple structure then you can see the votive stupas and the back side of Monastery No.1.
