[TechNotes -04] Which Memory card should I buy for 4 K video (in Mobile)? Part-1 - TravellerG

Which Memory card should I buy for 4 K video (in Mobile)?

I have heard this question many times - here is an extremely simple solution.

For a typical mobile user, the following details should help.

  • For those who are in a hurry & do not have time to read the entire post:
  1. A simple solution is to look for the marking “V30” on the Memory Card & buy - OK? It should be OK for recording 4K videos, for sure (Mobile).

  2. How many GB Storage Card is good?

Typically, a 64GB should give you almost 1Hr 20 Mins of 4K footage.

Note: To give an accurate answer, we need to take much more data from a user; this depends on many factors, including the duration of your recordings and the cost factor, etc. Looking at the current market (price) & other reasons, I personally suggest, 64 GB.

  • For those who have a little more time:

Firstly, let us have a brief look at the essential Nomenclatures (markings on the card) which can help the user to make a more precise decision: (We are only touching just 2 Parameters relevant for this aspect.)

If you need a 64 GB card for 4K Video, then:

  1. Marking regarding Storage Size: SDHC/MicroHC Cards provide you storage between 2GB to 32GB & will not be sufficient. Whereas, SDXC/MicroXC cards give you 64 GB to 2TB which will be the right one.

  2. Marking regarding Speed: Class 10 & V30: Class10 is a parameter used for Still Photos & V30 is used for Videos - both show the capability to keep the ‘Continous Writing Speed’ of 30MB/ps, which is needed for 4K Videos.

Note: SDHC= Secure Digital High Capacity & SDXC= Secure Digital Extreme Capacity

Again, we came to the above conclusion - ie. A V30, 64GB Card will have all other parameters (Ex: SDXC) automatically printed on it.

There are 2 more parameters on the above card:

  • U3 or Ultra High-Speed class3 also assures at least 30 MB/s write speed.
  • A2 is another Application Performance standard, which also points at the high write/read speeds & a few other features.

Why so many Parameters?

Since Micro SD cards are used for a very wide range of purposes/applications/gadgets, (other than Apps, photos, videos & documents, etc. in Mobile), there are multiple standards required to express the suitability of these different USES - hope you got me.

Note:

  1. There can be many other considerations & arguments, based on many other features and brands to buy a Memory Card - such a discussion will be more technical & complicated.
  2. There are many brands: (In Indian market): Some of the leading brands are Sandisk, Strontium, Kingston, Lexor, Samsung, etc. and are supposed to be extremely reliable.
  3. Personal Choice:

I personally use Extreme PRO cards because they have additional features like temperature-proof, waterproof, shock-proof, and X-ray-proof, etc. along with slightly higher write speed & much higher ‘Transfer Rate’; of course these additional features come at a slightly higher cost too.

If you are serious to understand further details, it is Here the next post.
