[#TeamIndia] A temple made in a single stone

Mahadev Temple , Tambdisurla , Goa

Hello everyone,

This post is about a temple, which is carved in a single stone in 13th century A.D. This is one of the famous temples for tourism in India. This temple is located in the deep forest with eco-friendly environment, which is full of trees and plants with good breeze. During the rainy season, if you visit here, you can also see different types of: plants, birds, sounds of birds, new verity of insects etc. in the forest. Even elephants will come here, during the summer season in search of water. This temple is very near to a natural water stream, amidst many tourist attractions like waterfall, historic temples, etc.

DETAILS:

This temple is facing towards east, and stands on a strong base. Inside it has a stone sculpture of Nandi – The Vahana of Lord Shiva (The vehicle of Lord Shiva). The temple has three entrances in the north, south and east. The raw material used to make this temple is a soft stone known as “chloritic schist”. Minute and Detailed carvings are easily possible in this soft stone.

HISTORICAL DETAILS FROM SAINTS:

We had a long chat with the senior saint in this Temple. He explained to us that this Temple is built in the style of “Kadamba” (ancient royal family of Karnataka) They ruled Karnataka and some nearby region between 345 to 525 CE .This Temple is dedicated to Lord Siva by “Kadamba” dynasty in 13th century A.D. This is the only Temple built in “Kadamba” Architectural designs and preserved till now. He spoke a lot about this Temple because this Temple is built out of a single stone.

CARVINGS:

The temple has four pillars; these pillars have beautiful carvings like rosettes and others designs. The ceiling is decorated with carved lotus flowers. In the eastern pillar you can see an elephant crushing a horse. As I have already said this temple has three entrances all these entrance are very beautifully decorated on all sides with many designs. The wall of the inner temple is carved with sculptures like Gods (Lord Siva, Ganesh, Narayanan, Vishnu, Brahma, Bhairava), Goddesses (Parvathi, Saraswati, Gajalakshmi), etc…

SIMILAR TO:

This temple has remarkable resemblances with Kalleshwar Temple at Balambid and Jain Temple at Belgaum in Karnataka. All these temples have plain walls without a special statue with two tiered ‘Shikhara’.

OTHER HISTORICAL DETAILS:

This temple reflects the later Chalukyan and Hoysala Architectural features and represents faith through the presence of deities. This temple is dedicated to Lord Siva. This is a unique place in Goa. All these Architectural designs and sculptures is to 13th century A.D.

LOCATION:

Near Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife sanctuary Sanguem, Surla, Goa .

**Hi @raghava01 **

Really Amazing post. Hat’s off’ to you :cowboy_hat_face:.

In the cover photo, #Team India Logo, concepts by @ermest and collobrated by our Mentor @TravellerG names correctly used by you.

It’s new that at Goa there’s a Temple made upon a single stone during 13 century AD is a news for me, because Goa is meant for only Beach and resorts.

Your content, narration and Photo’s are awesome @raghava01 .

Definitely it has to be visited by all. The photos in all directions you have shared is a beautiful one.

I thought why you have used captions for narrating for photo 3, since at the entrance there is a display board written the history in cap’s only. It’s cool.

Thanks for sharing your valuable post @raghava01 .

Hello @raghava01 ,

Thank you for sharing all these details and great photos with us. It’s the first time that I hear about this particular temple.

It’s fascinating how a temple is built of a single stone! However, I remember reading a long time ago that there are several such temples, built out of a single stone. Am I right?

@Cecilita thankyou for your comments .

  1. This temple is used nowadays as tourist attraction and a place of worship.

  2. Inside this temple there will be a “Nandi” (Vahana of Lord Siva) . Inside this temple where “Nandi” is kept, we visitors are not supposed to take photography . So, i was unable take photography and upload here.

Hi @raghava01

Thanks for posting about this Temple. It is great to know that this structure is built from a single stone. The carvings are beautiful. Your pictures are simply superb. In the 3rd picture is the tree emerging from between the mandapam or is it back of the mandap.

TeamIndia is doing great.

You are extremely right dear @BorrisS

There are many Single Stone Temples, in different parts of South India; but, most of them do have Daily Rituals / Pooja.

To my surprise, in this temple there is Daily Pooja & Annual festival & all…

Hope you got the point,

Thanks for your involvement
