TAXI! WHAT VEHICLE OF TRANSPORTATION DO YOU USE MOST FREQUENTLY IN YOUR CITY?

Keke Marwa in the color of the Commercial Transport Road workers of Lagos state; Yellow

I know if we were to choose our favorite Mode of Transportation, many of us will delightfully say; “By Air”.

But, if someone was to ask; “what mode of transportation do you use the most?” It would most probably be; 'by road’ except you belong to the Royal family or are a Diplomat or something or you live in a place like Venice, I doubt your answer will be any other, than; by road. :see_no_evil:

On road, there are several vehicles of transportation, right? Which Vehicle of transportation do you frequent the most?

Lagos and the Autorickshaw called ‘Keke Marwa’

The one I use the most is called; “Keke Marwa” in Lagos state. It is a three-wheeled Autorickshaw used in the suburbs of Lagos.

It is banned from all Major Expressways and Urban Centers in Lagos State, Nigeria. Keke literally means; “vehicle” or “cycle”. Mohammed Buba Marwa was the Governor of Lagos State who introduced and imported the Autorickshaw to Lagos in his Poverty Alleviation Scheme.

FOR ME

For all my “running around” during the week, I use Keke Marwa because;

  • It is safer than Motorcycles
  • It occupies less space on the road than the Commercial buses, so it is a ‘time-saver’ during severe traffic gridlock.
  • It saves time! The other time, the driver took me to the market, I left him in the traffic and took a bike before hooking up with a ‘Keke Marwa’. I got home at least three hours before the driver. :astonished:

FOR THE MOTORISTS

Other road users especially Many motorists hate the Keke Marwa because; they try to squeeze and fit into the spaces meant for the Pedestrian walk, the Motorcyclists are angry because they encroach on their spaces (colloquially; “they shook head” :joy: ), while the Motorists find them to be irritating because; they try to outrun and overtake the Motor Vehicles, even though they have neither the Stamina nor the strength.

watch this 9-seconds-video to find out.

This Video was shot at Alaba International Market, Ojo, Lagos; the biggest International Market of Home Appliances and Electronics in Nigeria and the home of Imu-Ahia**; the Apprenticeship system that ensures that a new trader never has to rely on loans for startup.**

In India, they call this “Taxi”, right?

Please share with me your most frequent way of getting around in your Locality.

I look forward to the day I can answer; “By Air” . The day where I can have my personal chopper and Private Jet :smirk: :see_no_evil: to survive this Lagos traffic.

Lagos traffic is so epic that; someone living in Lekki went to drop off someone at the Airport and the person going to London arrived before he returned back to Lekki.

It’s a 6-hour flight by the way :smirk: and the journey from the airport to Lekki Phase 1 should ordinarily not take more than 45 minutes :see_no_evil: :smirk:

Nice article involving everyday life @Ewaade_3A

The local transport is something that is important for everyday work.

My favorite is the Rickshaw called Tuk-Tuk out here in India.

In Delhi where I live currently, diesel and petrol rickshaws are banned and we have mostly electric or battery-operated ones.

They carry 6-8 people at a time for as cheap as 10 INR up to 10 kilometers.

I must change 3 eRickshaws at majors points to reach the office daily.

Here 's a sample image to 2 types of auto-rickshaws. The one in the front is electric and the one far away is the Diesel version:

In the above picture where there are two people are sitting, actually 3 people sit there.

Additionally, two more sit - one on each side of the driver.

We call it to pile up in a “dug-dugi” and go to the office.

See how the driver moves to one side to accommodate the passenger

The one in the Far right (in the first Photo) is the one we use here in Lagos and actually runs on Petrol.

Is Bajaj an Indian company?

The ones in the other photos you shares, do you mean they do not use fuel? @TusharSuradkar

@Ewaade_3A motorbike so popular here

Hi @Ewaade_3A,

very interesting but also funny post, nice to see the different way of transportation especially when we think it might a very common thing but it isn’t.

Here in Lucca (Tuscany) where I live it is very popular to use bikes, the city is historical and the city center is composed by many tiny old streets closed to the public traffic.

However I move daily with my car since my office isn’t very close ?.

But I do love the three wheeled small motorbikes, I had lot of fun when used them abroad. Is the Keke Marwa something similar to the Tuk Tuk, right?

The issue of the traffic in Lagos ehn. People see pictures of Lagos and they think money is picked off the streets, so everyone moves to Lagos!

In Lagos traffic, you can complete a whole wedding ceremony and hold reception.

If you come to Lagos, you will move around in the Uber Taxi, you can only find this Autorickshaw in the suburbs or in or around the big markets like the one I did this shot @MdMRahman

Keke marwa looks so interesting! I guess it doesn’t rain very much in Lagos?

I live in Vancouver, Canada. In the summer, I get around most often on a bicycle. The city has invested in dedicated bike lanes that are safe and fast to get around the city. It’s reliably faster than driving a car when there’s traffic.

I don’t have photos myself specifically, but a Google image search for “vancouver canada bike lanes” shows some good images of it: https://www.google.com/search?q=vancouver+canada+bike+lanes&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwiNncey0ejpAhXoAzQIHZPQAscQ2-cCegQIABAA&oq=vancouver+canada+bike+lanes&gs_lcp=CgNpbWcQA1DI1w9YotwPYLbdD2gAcAB4AIABOYgBzgKSAQE3mAEAoAEBqgELZ3dzLXdpei1pbWc&sclient=img&ei=xCjZXo2rJOiH0PEPk6GLuAw&rlz=1C1CHBF_enCA850CA850

For the road and the rest of the year, we have many options: drive your own vehicle, bus, taxi, car shares (you drive and park it, like car2go), or ride share (someone drives you, like Uber)

Thanks for the interesting post on the mode of transportation in local areas. In my hometown Hyderabad, 3 wheeler auto rickshaws, public buses, rental taxis and bikes :trolleybus: and metro train are the main means of transportation and I prefer using metro train because of its convenience and fast service. The auto rickshaw drivers in Hyderabad usually over charge the passengers but thanks to Uber and Ola the pricing issue is resolved now. In my current city of residence (Alkhobar, Saudi Arabia) only taxis are available for public transport, the government is planning to initiate the Metro train.

Hai @Ewaade_3A .

My frequent taxi is Hail Taxi (OJOL, Ojek On Line, two wheel motor bike that hail using smartphone application)

The first time I use this kine of taxi because I got around USD 10 perks as a Local Guides from Go - Jek.an application for hail two wheel taxi. I am a loyal customer for this brand because I always get perks from Google Local Guides and discount voucher from GO-JEK.

This is a picture and my first GO-JEK driver.

I was about to say the same too, @Ewaade_3A . This is so beautiful!

In Nigeria, wearing helmet is mandatory but only 3/10 do wear while riding bikes and if you’re lucky enough you find the rider wearing only without passenger. @Nyainurjanah

The Autorickshaw overcharge? What?! I cannot believe my eyes and ears!

I have heard of Uber, I use that a lot too. But, I have not heard of ‘Ola’.
