Taiwan Tradition of eating spring rolls on Tomb Sweeping Holiday

Tomb Sweeping is just around the corner, Every early April, we go to ancestor’s tomb and clean the tomb to memorize the past. You can also see many Taiwanese families will prepare the homemade Run Bing (steamed spring roll, 潤餅). Nowadays, it’s easy to buy a Run Bing off the rack, but nothing compares to real homemade Run Bing.

Why we eat Run Bing at Tomb-Sweeping day?

There are different stories about the origin of the spring rolls. One saying I that they were invented to worship ancestors on Tomb Sweeping Day when the Mongolians invaded southern China, using roll-out dough wrappers and leftover vegetables. Another story credited the creation to a Madame Lee in the Ming Dynasty, who wanted something quick to make for her husband because he was in the military and could not eat meals at regular times. What stuff is wrapped inside the Run Bing?

Every family has its receipt. Here’s my mom’s receipt! A variety of ingredients make great Run Bing!

  • Sliced Pan-Fried Egg

  • Pork

  • Dried Tofu

  • Yam bean
