Tactile Maps and Accessibility at Jantar Mantar in Delhi

Last week I visited the Jantar Mantar monuments in Delhi that are related to astronomy and are spread over a huge area. This was part of the Accessibility for All initiative.

The facilities for navigation like ramps and well-paved walkways at this place are noteworthy.

A remarkable feature that was tucked away in a corner was the tactile maps and diagrams of the monuments engraved on a metal plate. The facilitates the blind who can touch-sense and get an idea of the real object.

Here is the real object that is accessible and can be navigated from very close.

Besides that, there is also a large information metal board embossed in Braille with the description of the monument.

The entire area is well-paved and with leveled flooring that makes navigation for wheelchair users an enjoyable experience.

The main entrance to Jantar Mantar is leveled with the street and facilitates easy entry for a wheelchair-bound person.

The ticket counter is easily accessible. This is now closed temporarily but will open soon. In the meantime, an online ticketing system is provided by way of scanning a QR code and paying using net banking.

Back to the tactile maps, these are provided for every astronomy-related monument in Jantar-Mantar.

Within the campus are accessible toilets connected to the main pathways with smooth tiled passages to facilitate the visually-impaired and also a wheelchair.

There are large displays that clearly indicate the way to the washroom/toilets.

The washrooms also have ramps to facilitate wheelchair entry.

Here’s a snapshot

Such facilities are very helpful for both the blind and the visually impaired besides those with limited mobility.

How to Reach

Take the Delhi Metro Yellow, Red, or the Blue line, all of which pass through Cannought Place.

I visited the place on my bike and parked in the Palika underground p[arking for INR 10 per hour.
