Atreyapuram is A small remote village in East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh shot into Global fame for its unique Paper sweet called as Pootharekulu in local colloquial language.
This unique sweet is most sought after eatery in almost all festivals of Andhra Pradesh. This sweet is being used as a special menu in all types of hostings in both Telugu speaking states of Andhra & Telangana. These were sent to their friends and relatives who are residing in abroad as a special gift. Making of this sweet is a cottage industry in Atreyapuram. According to villagers, Pootharekula originated at Atreyapuraqm about three centuries ago. Jaggery was used for making the delicacy initially. With the passage of time, Sugar replaces jaggery as a major ingredient of Pootharekulu. Now, a variety of Poothrekulu is available in the market. Hot and spicy Poothrekulu is a new creation. The price of each paper sweet ranges from Rs 7 to Rs 15 depending on the quality and ingredients. Ghee and sugar are liberally used in making the delicacy.
