Why is it possible that supplements can not replace 100% of natural foods that we eat?
According to studies and research, natural food provides more nutrients and balance than supplements.
I remember hearing some people talk about how they could potentially live on supplements alone, musing and actually considering it. Not an experiment I would want to undertake. I love fresh fruits and veggies… supplements are boring IMO.
Expanding on what GigiR said, it’s entirely possible that we don’t know all of what we get and need from natural foods, so that makes it impossible to reproduce from supplements. Besides the nutrients themselves, there are the balances of them as GigiR said, and the balance of them in relation to things we haven’t discovered and/or don’t have good ways to measure and/or reproduce. If you look at the history of when vitamins, minerals and other nutrients were discovered, it will become more apparent.
Additionally, depending on what you consider supplements, most supplements are focused on isolating specific known nutrients, yet neglect other known things we get from food: primarily things that have calories, like protein, carbohydrates, and fat. Calories are our fuel, and are not something one can get from vitamin and mineral supplements. The same goes for dietary fiber. There are some supplements specifically for that, so theoretically you could amass a combination of specialized supplements to provide all that we know of and are able to reproduce, but still you would come up short in one way or the other as we simply don’t know all the elements that support our life and health and happiness, nor are we able to reproduce it all as supplements.
Lastly, think of logic: they are called supplements for a reason. They are meant to supplement a diet of actual food with actual nutrients, not to replace it.
