While travelling to Nainital and Ranikhet in the month of October I stayed in Gwalior for two days. Though whenever I find opportunity to visit I don’t miss at all. Ancient heritage are so spectacular that memories won’t slip of mind. I heard about the Sun temple and it’s architecture being a late 20th century construction it’s fascinating and illustrating the devotional spirit.
Sun temple is located in Morar in Tapovana Garden which is now known as Surya Van. This temple is dedicated to the Sun God and was built by Famous Industrialist GD Birla. Work was commenced in 1984 and completed in 1988.
Seven horses four in one side and three in other side depicting 7 days of the week and temple is like chariot. 12 wheels each side depicts the day and night hours. Each wheel is having 4 thin and 4 thick spokes gap between two spokes is 1.5 hours. Images of about 365 deities around the temple’s exterior walls depicts the 365 days. It has three entrances and among them one is the main entrance having the sculpture of Navgrah. Two life size statues of Shri Birla and Shreemati Birla facing to the temple is a sign of homage are erected. Tower over the Sanctum Sanctorum is the tallest and having amalka and flanked by Kalash stone panels are bearing the load of lofty tower four sides circular glasses are fixed for the ingress of sunlight over the Sun God. Interior I very attractive and having spiritual environment. White marble is used in the interior. Sanctum Sanctorum house the Sun God in Lotus. Main entrance serves as portico and and great hall is for devotees. Roof is of retreating order and main entrance roof’s dome is the smallest and then of hall and of the main Shikhara. It’s considered as replica of Konark ancient Sun temple. Its architecture is quite similar to the Nagara Style. Exterior is built by red stone and richly carved and in the carved niches deities are placed, including sculptures various carved floral motifs are spectacular. Out side the temple in one cenotaph Sun’s upper two arms with lotuses and lower two arms are with Gada and Shankh. Lord Ganesha and Lord Vishnu with his incarnation is available among the 365 deities.
Exterior is well maintained in the form of lawn and trees.
This temple is open in morning 6.30 AM and closes at evening 6 PM. 12 noon to 1 PM temple is closed. It’s a major attraction among the locals and visitors.
