Suggestion travel for NYC

Hi, I am going to travel to New York in May and I need some advice, surely many of you know the city.

I have created lists on Maps of places to go and lists of restaurants and various places to eat, surely I will not be able to do everything but probably, with your help, I will be able to set priorities.

The period in which I will have travel will be May so I hope to be able to travel without rain, but in case of rain do you propose something special so as not to be outdoors?

Do you suggest to see the city by bus, underground, taxi or uber?

Is something missing from the lists? What can I add or remove from those lists?

Thanks a lot Local Guides!

@TraciC can you suggest me a place that I miss from the list?

Hey @manulele81

I am already jealous about this trip :slightly_smiling_face:

BTW, what about to change your label to “Travel” ?

I am sure that a lot of Local Guides will be happy to improve your list, while I will wait for your photos

Hi @manulele81 , you will love NY. It is an incredible place to visit and also to eat. I visited NY in 2017 and reviewing my timeline on Google Maps; I created for you a concise list: 3 places you should eat it in NY. Here is the list: If you have the opportunity to visit one of these places, give feedback later.

I suggest you also to take a look at this post. The most-loved restaurants in New York City, a list created based on Google Local Favorites program.

Enjoy your trip, my friend!

Helloooooo @manulele81 ! You have some great places on that list. I think it’s the first time I’ve seen so many historical buildings on someone’s list and love it! My first question is always what do you like? Then: What do you love to do most? How do you prefer to travel (packing it all in) or more relaxed? Is food important? Then I can recommend specific things. It also depends on how long you’re in town.

In the meantime, here’s my “Traci’s NYC Tips” map that has a LOT of places. I also have a few lists:

NYC Places to Visit (in the financial district)

NYC Street Art (needs more places)

And Local Guides has a list of the best pizza places in NYC, in case you want to do a little compare: https://goo.gl/maps/xfSt39GVJi8ArpwA7. Hahah!

You also really love photos and video, right? Perhaps @PaulPavlinovich can recommend his favorite photo spots. I went with him to the Brooklyn Bridge area and he must have taken at least 300 pics!

As for getting around, walking and taking the train (subway) is the best way. Save your money by not taking taxis as they’re super slow anyway!

@ErmesT thanks for the info. I tried, when I was publising to set the properly category but I enconter in a problem. I described better here https://www.localguidesconnect.com/t5/General-Discussion/Error-on-choosing-category-on-localguidesconnect/td-p/2147075 (correct link after @ErmesT notification)

Do you want to join in this trip??? I’m jealous that I can’t meet peoples neither in third European Meetup (I lost all European Meetup!) because it’s should be realized just few day before my trip to NYC! Unofficial news speak about 1 may on Munich, right?

@AlexandreCampbell thanks for your personal list, I will folow the list of places and, if I will try their kitchen, I send you a photo of the dish!

I know the automated list, but sometimes (when possible) I try to ask to persons. When I go in small restaurants, usually, I try to know the “dish of the day”. When possible I try to get suggestion from who that already know the place (customers or owners) and I like to taste the specialty.

Everyday a place can be different, every experience can be better!

Thanks @TraciC also a My Maps! GREAT!

First of all:
I will stay in NYC for 10 days and I will travel around the City all days to see as much as possible. Thanks for suggestion about subway & trains.

I want to stay outdoor as much as possible. For us walking is great during the vacations. I can’t buy a lot of things because I will fly without hold baggage, just a small hand baggage, what I returning to home will stay in my mind. But… Food is really important!!!

First important thinks: see a lot of places
2° food
3° cultural point, museum, public library, street art, live music
4° shopping area
5° modern area, fashion area

However thanks a lot for all the lists, I will use during the walk to see if I hit any of your point of interest.

I will stay in an Harlem apartment. I want to see as much as possible. If I can all with less difficult can be really better!

Off topic:
Sometime, someone, asked in the community of Google Maps: Hey Google Maps, can I organize my destination ordening by “best connect time”?.. this can be very helpfull! For example I’ve four points: A, B, C & D. Where B & D are really near, almost in the same place, A is near my starting point and C near destination… in this simplify way Google Maps can suggest to move D point before C Point and to create the connections between: A, B, D and finnaly C… Its’ clear? Can be really usefull!

You take a link to the “reply page” @manulele81 , not to a post.

I suppose you are talking about this one: Error on choosing category on localguidesconnect

This is an interesting issue, BTW it is not an idea, so I am tagging @DeniGu to move the post on How to

Hi @manulele81 and thanks for the ping @TraciC I absolutely love New York. I’ve been three times in my life, once for a day for work and once a little under a week and last year’s trip nearly two weeks. The city is amazing, it truly is the city that never sleeps. Fortunately just over the river in Brooklyn you can get an affordable and quiet nights sleep :).

My favourite places are in mt list New York Destinations as to your questions, I use taxi or lyft (cheaper than uber when I was there) to get to/from airport although there is also the train. Taxi to Manhattan is capped at US$50 from JFK. Getting around town I highly recommend the subway - its fantastic. For about US$30 you can get a 7 day unlimited ride ticket which is awesome value.

I would stay off Manhattan and suggest AirBnB over a hotel. We got a place for about US$60/night in Brooklyn and it was a little basement apartment. It had its quirks but at that price it was great. There are accomodation opportunities for every budget.

There are so many great things to see and do. For photography I love the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge (for taking pictures of the Brooklyn Bridge) - both have pedestrian walkways. I love the waterfront. Jump on a Staten Island Ferry for a free harbour cruise! Make sure you visit Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty, get the pedestal reserve ticket for the statue and the behind the scenes tour for Ellis Island. Be really careful there are tons of scam websites and scam ticket sellers - this is the ONLY place you can legitimately get your tickets https://www.statuecruises.com/statue-liberty-and-ellis-island-tickets/

The food in New York is really good if you look around, theres lots of awesome experiences on my list. Look for my reviews! My absolutely favourite is Katz Deli by far with L&S Supmoni Gardens a close second and of course you have to have Nathans Famous Hotdogs.

At all times in New York I felt safe and the people despite what is said are warm and welcoming. They move fast so you’ve got to keep up!

Enjoy your trip my friend. If you have any questions at all feel free to ask here or PM me.

@PaulPavlinovich really thanks for the list and for the link to get ticket for Ellis Island!

a suggestion … would you travel with a reflex camera with at least 1 wide angle and 1 tele or would you travel light only with the 360 ° camera?

I travelled with two mirrorless bodies (one just a backup and left in the accommodation) and two lens (one a backup). My main lens was a 12-100 zoom (24-200 35mm equivalent) which is an awesome all rounder lens for travel. At home I would use other lenses from my selection but I when travelling I try to keep the weight down.

You certainly could do it with just a 360 camera if you don’t mind the image quality of your memories @manulele81
